Elizabeth Bruenig says socialism isn’t the dirty word we’ve always thought it was. You see, we capitalist Deplorables just don’t understand that socialism has been so misunderstood all these years.

The United States doesn’t have a familiar, established socialist history to look to for guidance on what socialism might mean in this country. But that doesn’t mean socialism is hopelessly nebulous, or that Americans who are interested in the idea are wandering dabblers. It just means that socialism, like any sophisticated term, warrants thoughtful consideration.

Yes, socialism warrants thoughtful consideration for about .000009 seconds and then dumped in the trash. Our Founding Fathers knew that we could and should be able to manage our lives and our businesses on our own without some government weenie barging in and telling us what to do, how to vote, what to buy, and what we can and cannot eat or drink.

In this Republic we have a voice. It’s called Freedom of Speech. Under socialism..not so much. Socialism tells you how high to jump. Our Republic only says, jump as high as you want.

But Elizabeth fails to recognize that. In fact, she thinks capitalism is evil and it’s failing everyone because no one is FAIR!

In fact, if we just would understand that today’s socialism is great because Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the new IT girl; we’d jump on the bandwagon!

And the politics of differing socialist visions played out over time, with different forms of socialism taking root in various countries through the years. The profusion of disparate historical examples of socialist governments can understandably cause confusion about what socialism looks like on the ground: Soviet Russia or modern-day Norway? One may as well ask if the United Arab Emirates or the United States of America is really capitalist. The answer, in both cases, has to do with varieties, degrees, democracy and methodology.

Well toots, lets take a look at what “socialism looks like on the ground.”

Then there’s the fact that Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador have enacted major border controls due to the influx of those fleeing a socialistic regime that has left them starving.

Peru and Ecuador have enacted new rules to help curtail the mass immigration from Venezuela. The influx of migrants leaving Venezuela has also led to mob violence in the case of Brazil, where it has gotten so chaotic in border regions that the Brazilian state of Roraima has asked the Government to halt Venezuelan immigration completely, Reuters reports.

Yeah, that’s some terrific socialism at work right there.

Let’s talk government control shall we? Venezuela is today’s example. Right now, people are starving and dying. Businesses have been shut down for the ‘greater good of the people,’ and the government’s answer is MOAR taxes!

The leader of Venezuela’s socialist regime, Nicolás Maduro, announced late last week a new series of sweeping reforms aimed at reducing inflation and improving the quality of life in the besieged nation. According to Reuters, Maduro’s plan includes a minimum wage increase of 3000 percent and new taxes.

Maduro is hoping to invest the money gained from the new taxes in the Petro, the Venezuelan government’s new cryptocurrency. According to Bloomberg, the Maduro regime stated on Friday that it “values the Petro at 3,600 sovereign bolivars,” worth $.014, and that it plans to allow “the cryptocurrency to fluctuate.”

Did y’all catch that? The Petro has a value of FOURTEEN cents right now. But HEY! Raising taxes will fix everything!

Elizabeth, pull your head out of your ass. In fact, just take a trip to Venezuela and watch socialism in action. When people don’t even have enough money to buy FOOD to survive, how is raising THEIR taxes going to help? Answer is, it won’t.

That’s quite a bit of reality right there. As for Elizabeth’s assertion that Norway’s socialism is the bomb diggity…because it’s supposedly social democracy which is kinda sorta different from actual socialism.

The fact it, socialism will always fail and it always will be a dirty word. You know why? Because eventually, as Margaret Thatcher said, the government will run out of other people’s money AND we will get damned good and tired of letting the government run us into the ground.

Not to be picky Nina, but that’s actually 1.4 cents, not 14…

I’m afraid people like Elizabeth Bruenig will have to swing on the gallows next to their socialist friends. And, if we are lacking enough properly constructed gallows, street lights will do. Seriously.

Yes, because looking to all the OTHER examples in history wouldn’t tell us anything, at all.
    *eyeroll*

Well, I’m going to disagree on the amount of time we should ponder it. Because it’s DANGEROUS, and that should prompt a LOT more consideration of it.

Our Republic only says, jump as high as you want.
As long as you’re not jumping over someone’s fence, or onto their car, or their wife.
(And, as long as you’re not jumping more than 50′ above ground level (FAA). *smh*)

    she thinks capitalism is evil
And we really have to stop accepting the Marxist language of “capitalism”. What Marx wrote about as “capitalism” is NOT a free-market economy. It is NOT what we’re supposed to have in this country.
Push back and stop accepting “capitalism” as the descriptive of a fair, free-market economic system.

different forms of socialism taking root in various countries through the years
Yes, there’s socialism (Venezuela), communism (Soviet Union, China), and fascism (Germany, Italy). Go on, I’m dying to hear more.

Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador have enacted major border controls
I say give them all guns, some tactical training, then send them home to solve their own problems.

    worth $.014

Uh, no, Nina, you missed a decimal place there. The Petro has a value of ONE POINT FOUR cents.
    LMAO

it always will be a dirty word. You know why?
Really, even more than its practical failure, it’s a moral atrocity. It relies on stealing from some to give to others. When executed on a gov’t level, it denies property rights without consent. It essentially denies your agency as an individual human being. It treats you as a widget in a giant machine.
You’d think the folks so bent on “agency” and being treated as self-defined individuals would recoil from socialism……

  • Ewin Barnett says:

Socialism is the belief that society will be better in every way that counts when we each are forced by government to live at the expense of everyone else. When it was tried in several countries in the last 100 years, it resulted in the death of some 100 million people. At its peak, about 11% of the entire adult population of the Soviet Union had been a prisoner of its Gulag, which was the nation’s largest “employer”. Socialism gave us the Killing Fields of Cambodia. Socialism gave us the deliberate starvation of millions of people in the Ukraine.

Socialism has caused more humans to suffer and die than any other belief system in human history. Yet it keeps being advocated. I can only conclude that the inner spirit of humans yearns for Utopia so deeply that humans just cannot resist any scheme that promises to make Utopia possible. Every aspect of socialism turns to hell on earth, but it is a hell designed to bring about Utopia. Go figure.

It is now provable (that to economist Ludwig von Mises) that a socialist economy is “impossible” (his words). It is unsustainable. It literally, mechanically, and in every way cannot work. And the sad joke here is that socialists are the ones who scold the rest of us about “sustainability”. Socialism works until it runs out of the assets and lives of the humans that it must subjugate. It is evil.

  • Lurking Observer says:

The Left loves the America that COULD (or SHOULD) be, but detests the America that IS.

Consequently, it’s no great leap that the Left also believes in the socialism that COULD be, but ignores the socialism that IS.

  • Randy Jordan says:

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez cites Norway as an example of a successful socialist society. This is the problem with these cheerleaders for socialism: they don’t even know the meaning of the term. Under socialism, the state owns and controls all means of production, meaning all business. 95% of Norway’s economy is run by capitalism. Here’s an explanation from a Norwegian: https://www.quora.com/Is-Norway-socialist-or-capitalist

  • stan says:

Never fall into the trap of even considering claims about a European country being successful. Without the massive subsidies and benefits from the USA, no country in Europe would be working. We prop them up in healthcare in all manner of ways. And we prop them up militarily. Without the US, every European country’s govt and economy would be in the toilet.

Therefore, the argument that country X shows us how well policy Y (national healthcare, socialism, whatever) works is a joke. Shouldn’t even be taken seriously.
