The Grammys: Social Commentary With Music on the Side

Was this an awards show for music or a bad fashion show with social commentary and the occasional song and dance? That is the question.

Award shows like this, in general, have become little more than prom night for celebrities. They get to dress up, go to a big party, and clap when someone is voted king of the prom. Last night, the prom king was Sam Smith. (Disclaimer: I have zero idea who he is, and the only reason the Grammys were even on at my house is because my husband went to high school with Brandy Clark. True story.) Sam Smith won 4 Grammys (best new artist, record of the year, song of the year, and best pop vocal album), but that’s not what Twitter was talking about.

First, Madonna has wardrobe issues for someone who is 56 years old.

I’m going to do you all a favor and not show you the rear side of that outfit. If you click on the link, you’ll see it. If not… you’d think someone wealthy like Madonna could afford pants and underwear. I’ll leave it at that.

Her performance also left people either scratching their heads or giggling.

And then the social commentary began. Though apparently not everyone can agree if Pharrell really was making a statement or not.

I guess this one is open to interpretation. Pharrell has commented on Michael Brown and Ferguson before and made a lot of people mad. He may keep his silence this time and let people believe what they want to believe.

However, Gwyneth Paltrow had no problems speaking up about her social justice beliefs – while introducing Beyonce.

Prince also made a comment.

But then, the awards show went on. And Beyonce didn’t win.

Cue the cries of racism.

And cue the Kayne West meltdown, which first everyone thought was a prank, considering what he once did to Taylor Swift when Beyonce lost to her.

But maybe it wasn’t really a prank.

And of course, if it’s a celebrity prom night, it means that politicians are going to try and mix with their constituents – the rich and famous.

Yes, that is Democrat Representatives Sheila Jackson Lee and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (who is also the current DNC chair).

Not to be outdone, President Obama had to send in a video to make his own social commentary at the Grammys.

Which led to this awkward point.

Maybe the president was actually delivering his message to the perfect audience, for a change. And at least he was promoting something important, and not himself. Unlike….

I have a suggestion for the Grammys, and every single other awards show. If we must have these, can we avoid all the pontificating and social grandstanding and lecturing from the rich and famous about the society that they don’t live in – because they don’t live outside of their gated neighborhoods and bodyguards to mix with the people they’re busy scolding. No? Okay. Guess I’ll still be skipping them and catching up on Twitter later.

Great post Deanna! I didn’t watch the Grammys, but I admit I did take a peek at some of the outfits. Good grief…

On another note, I did see that one artist and his song were winners. And most deservedly so.

Glen Campbell’s “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” is powerful, moving, and heart wrenching. I’m truly glad Glen, his song, his documentary of his last tour and battle with Alzheimers were recognized last night.

  • Appalled By The World says:

Well, looks like I missed nothing but the usual deranged bleatings from the usual brain damaged morons. Thank God for DVD-if I didn’t need a TV to watch them I’d be tempted to not have one at all,

  • But Chris Brown and R Kelly. Are both nominated tonight….

Well, to partially misquote the great philosopher Whoopi Goldberg: there is a difference between domestic abuse, and domestic abuse-abuse. Only a racist could fail to understand that.

And besides: when you get right down to it laws for for the unwashed heathen public and not the One Percenters hanging out at the Grammys. Know thy place, peasants!

  • GWB says:

I haven’t watched any awards show in a couple of decades or more. Because I don’t worship people, and that’s what the award shows are all about.

  • Rick Caird says:

All these people do is run around giving each other award. I cannot believe how many of these show there are. If they weren’t televised they would go away and that would be good.

Madonna needed a whip and some chains to complete the otufit.
