Bad voting machine! Bad! One really cannot make this up. Minnesota Dems have rescinded their endorsement of Omar Fateh, an avowed socialist, for Minneapolis mayor. The reasons why are myriad and laughter-inducing.

In a shocking move, the Minnesota DFL Party vacated the Minneapolis DFL’s endorsement of Sen. Omar Fateh for mayor of the city. The move comes after Mayor Jacob Frey asked the state party to nullify the endorsement citing problems at the city’s convention.

Last month, the Minneapolis DFL held its endorsing convention to decide which candidates  would receive the party’s stamp of approval in the upcoming fall elections. While the party unit considered candidates for many different offices, the mayoral endorsement was considered the main event.

When the convention ended, Fateh claimed he was the winner of the mayoral endorsement after the second round of voting. However, Frey’s campaign subsequently asked the state DFL to nullify the endorsement due to problems at the convention.

And just what were those problems?? First, a mayoral candidate was purposefully left out of the process. 

DFL Party Chairman Richard Carlbom said the committee reviewing the process found “substantial failures in the Minneapolis Convention’s voting process” at the July convention, including local party official’s acknowledgement that mayoral candidate DeWayne Davis was “errantly eliminated from contention.”

Fateh’s campaign is now arguing that Davis wouldn’t have made it out of the first round, so any votes he would’ve received wouldn’t have made a difference. Quite honestly, the only way they’d know that is if the system had already been gamed. Oh wait, there’s more.

You see, delegates to the convention were kicked to the curb. 

The DFL also concluded that there were multiple delegate-related issues such as the failure to upgrade all alternate delegates, the loss of a credentials book, and the failure to secure the master credentials list which “was accessed by non-members of the credentials committee, including the campaigns.”

I’m sorry, but this particular convention reeks of both outright incompetence and shenanigans. I’m just amazed that the state Democrat party isn’t willing to let all of this slide. Kicking Omar Fateh’s endorsement into the ditch is quite the bold move for the party. 

What’s even funnier is the MAIN reason why Fateh’s endorsement was dumped. 

The electronic voting machine FAILED. 

Yes folks, you read that correctly. The votes weren’t counted correctly. The voting machines “bogged down” you see. 

This was the premise of @MayorFrey objection in the first place; they literally watched it happen live.

Just like 2020.

That does seem kind of familiar doesn’t it? 

I’ve been laughing about all of this since I read the first report earlier last night. Democrats have spent YEARS insisting that every electronic voting machine is safe, secure, reliable, and will never fail.

That’s ok. It’s (D)ifferent when the Democrats call the systems into question. When Republicans do it, the world implodes. Just you watch. The media and Democrats will work overtime to ignore the voting machine failure. 

Meanwhile, Fateh’s organization issued their statement. 

“Twenty-eight party insiders voted to take away our endorsement behind closed doors,” Fateh said. “This group was comprised of non-Minneapolis residents, Mayor Frey supporters and even donors. This is exactly what Minneapolis voters are sick of. The insider games, the backroom decisions and feeling like our voice doesn’t matter in our own city. Frey’s team used every tactic they could, including delay and confusion on convention day, because they didn’t have the votes. We see this for what it is — disenfranchisement of thousands of Minneapolis caucus goers and the delegates who represented all of us on convention day. Let me be clear, we’re still in this fight. And we’re going to win.”

As did Jacob Frey.

And this is definitely an interesting point to consider, given this shakeup three months before the election. 

There’s a lot to unpack here, but at the end of the day, Tim Walz and his former Deputy Chief of Staff didn’t want to head into the midterms with Omar Fateh as the chief executive of Minnesota’s largest city.

Pulling the party’s endorsement was their way out of that mess.

That said, it’s also a bad look for the DFL that that convention was mis-managed so badly that an endorsement that made national news has now been kicked to the curb. 

Then again, Omar Fateh would’ve been very bad for Minneapolis. First, he was elected to office riding on the coattails of the George Floyd riots. Secondly, he’s firmly in the camp of defunding the police and taxing everything that moves.

Granted, Jacob Frey isn’t that much better. Minneapolis is facing the ‘vote for the lesser of two evils’ here. 

Since Omar Fateh is now accused of cheating, here’s a reminder:

His brother-in-law, Muse Mohamed was convicted of lying to a grand jury about illegally handling absentee ballots tied to ballot harvesting.

Again, the funny part of all of this is that Fateh’s endorsement was dropped due in large part because the oh so exceptional voting machines failed during the convention. 

You know, the thing that never ever happens… DID. 

The end result is that the Minneapolis Democrats have no recourse but to let the carnival show continue until election day. They have ranked choice voting, so the results …IF the voting machines are in working order… is anyone’s guess at the moment. 

Meanwhile, remember. Every vote counts, even when the voting machines throw a glitch.
