Yes, Virginia, There Is Gerrymandering

The Dems have a boosted chance of taking the house thanks to votes in Virginia last night. The much contested redistricting referendum passed…just barely, in a 51% to 48% vote.

The referendum was designed to “restore fairness”, apparently. “Fairness” that was promised not to look like not rigging the congressional map by Abigail Spanberger but, ended up with a grab to redraw the map just as she stepped into the Governor’s seat.

Restoring fairness…

Then there were the messages. A lot of the messages. Surrounded in confusion:

While former President Barack Obama has appeared in ads encouraging people to vote yes this year, the anti-redistricting TV spot released by Virginians for Fair Maps uses a 2017 video appearance of Obama speaking against gerrymandering.”-Jahd Khalil, VPM

There were also teachers in (very Blue) Fairfax county telling their students to push their parents to vote “yes”. This parent was asked by her teenagers after school pickup if she was voting “yes” because two of their teachers talked about the referendum in Civics class.

On Friday, I picked up my 14-year-old twin boys from school, and both jumped into the car and asked whether I was voting yes on Virginia’s redistricting measure Tuesday.

Turns out, in both of their civics classes that day, taught by two different teachers in Fairfax County Public Schools, they were urged to go home and persuade their parents to vote yes on the measure to make Virginia’s maps ‘as fair as they can be,’ to ‘stop Donald Trump at all costs.’ They used the same talking points being spewed by endless Democratic campaigns in the commonwealth to make Virginia come under one-party Democratic rule.”Kelly Sadler, The Washington Times

Civics. The study of rights and duty of citizenship. Apparently, these “educators” felt it was their right and duty to tell kids how their parents should vote? Encouraging voting is one thing. Telling someone how to vote is another. At least they have civics classes in their course catalogue. Although, arguably, the ones teaching it have yet to understand the basic concepts.

Fairfax Public Schools actually closed yesterday to accommodate voters. Read that again. The teachers told the kids how their parents should vote to “save democracy”, and, taxpayers in Fairfax country paid the same educators for a day of NO instruction. This, from Michelle Reid, Superintendent of FCPS:

With recent news that there will be a statewide Constitutional Amendment special election on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, I am writing to share that our schools will need to close on that day.

A total of 168 of our schools will serve as polling locations and the Virginia Department of Elections has indicated that a high voter turnout is expected across the Commonwealth.

Providing polling locations during an election is one of the many ways FCPS supports our entire Fairfax County community, but it means that we must provide open public access to portions of our school buildings throughout the day. Given the anticipated volume of voters, this would significantly impact normal school operations and limit our ability to provide a secure learning environment for students and staff.”-Dr. Michelle Reid

They’ve exceeded their required instructional hours this year, she says. So, the Superintendent closes school for the day in the interest of “safety and security”. She couldn’t possibly lend her bodyguard as security detail for the voting blitz? Last night, Fairfax county was holding out, though Decision Desk HQ had the referendum passing:

And the wording was also deceptive:

Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to allow the General Assembly to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections, while ensuring Virginia’s standard redistricting process resumes for all future redistricting after the 2030 census?”

Temporarily adopt to (ahem) “restore fairness” with “redistricting” after 2030. It’s only “fair” until then? And, of course, this redistricting has absolutely nothing to do with “fairness” and everything to do with a power grab.

We know, we know. The democrats are all up on X and other social media platforms uttering, “but Trump did it in Texas”. It wasn’t “cool” in their book when gerrymandering happened in Texas but, boy are they the cool kids now.

The “cool kids” are even making threats to the not-so-cool kids:

Next up: a lesson on bullying in civics class? Teach THAT, oh educators, oh, people who care sooooo much about OUR children!

In this house, we gerrymander. Gerrymandering is real. Gerrymandering is everything. Gerrymandering is life. Yes, Virginia, there is gerrymandering here. And while Virginia Democrats actually begin to believe there is a f-cking Santa Claus, it’s now up to the courts to decide what happens.

Let’s be clear. 51% of Virginia voters (largely in the DC swamp suburbs) voted themselves 89% of the commonwealth’s congressional representation. I don’t have a problem with hard ball politics–but claiming that such a naked power grab is “fair” is nothing more than fraud. And the party that loves to blather about “democracy” is about power–not democracy. Payback is usually harsh.
