Never let a crisis go to waste, a former Chicago mayor once said. Current Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot is ready to do the same.

However, Lori Lightfoot doesn’t sound like she’s creating a call to action. She actually says “call to arms.” Hmmmm, kinda sounds insurrectiony, doesn’t it?

Just what is the mayor trying to say here? Let’s break it down.

Lori Lightfoot is trying to tie the potential overturning of Roe v. Wade to a possible overturning of Obergefell, and thus the “right” that needs the “call to arms.” She’s doing this while proclaiming that Chicago is going to be some kind of abortion haven. Because “reproductive justice,” whatever that means.

Earlier in the day, Lightfoot announced a $500,000 investment in the Chicago Department of Public Health to support abortion access for women, according to FOX 32 Chicago, and the mayor said a host of different rights, beyond those associated with abortion, are at risk.”

“This includes women’s rights, trans rights, immigrant rights, and of course the right to same-sex and interracial marriage,” she said. “We simply cannot stand idly by and let that happen.”

Never mind that the draft decision that everyone is reading is A) a draft, not the final, and B) specifically mentions Obergefell as being exempted from the Dobbs decision. The panic involved on the left here acknowledges the main point – in Obergefell, the Supreme Court interpreted the law (specifically the Fourteenth Amendment’s equal protection clause) to apply to same-sex marriage. But as the left is learning, the Court giveth, and the Court taketh away. If they want permanency for any particular change, then Congress has to get off its butt and pass an actual law to codify what is wanted. The very reason that the left pushed Obergefell in the first place is because they knew that they couldn’t get a law passed, so they got the Supreme Court to do their work for them. The left has relied on the court to confirm their priors for years. Thanks to the work of President Donald Trump and Senator Mitch McConnell, that calculation has changed. Witness how the left can’t even get their own desired abortion law passed right now because it is more extreme than what Roe even allows.

But never mind all that, Lori Lightfoot has a crisis she’s not going to waste. A CALL TO ARMS! Wait, I thought Chicago was supposed to be a “gun free zone” and has enormously strict gun control. Where are all these “arms” going to come from?

And the mayor is putting forth a “call to arms” over abortion and gay rights. Never mind that children are senselessly murdered on the streets of Chicago, and crime has been out of control for years now. Never mind that the schools of Chicago were closed for over a year, and the teachers’ union made life as hard as possible for students to return to the classroom. These apparently weren’t true emergencies that required A CALL TO ARMS, according to Lori Lightfoot. But abortion and gay rights are apparently at the top of the emergency list for Lori Lightfoot. And just how far is she willing to go? Because this sounds like incitement.

But because Lightfoot is a Democrat, not a word will be said by the media. Double standards, engaged!

And finally, can I just point out the supreme irony in Lori Lightfoot deciding to plant her proverbial flag on the hill of abortion rights? Not only is Lightfoot a married lesbian past target childbearing age (she is turning 60 this year), her daughter is adopted. So, adoption is good, but abortion is better? Do as I say, not as I do? What a convoluted message. “A call to arms,” indeed.
