You’d think that facing possible impeachment might be daunting to a President. But then, Trump is not a typical President. In fact, he says impeachment helps him in winning his re-election.
On Friday, Trump sat down with NBC’s Chuck Todd for an interview with “Meet the Press,” in which Todd asked Trump why he thinks Nancy Pelosi hasn’t held an impeachment caucus yet.
“Because I think she feels that I will win much easier, and I’ve been told that by many people.”
Okay then. Todd continued by asking Trump if he thinks impeachment would be “good politics.”
“Do you think impeachment is good politics for you?”
“I think I win the election easier, but, you know, I’m not sure that I like having it.”
Trump went on by maintaining that he did nothing wrong, and that impeachment would be “very unfair.”

Trump is being Trump in this interview — full of bravado packed into his usual repetitive word salad. But he has a point. The push for impeachment may be a winning situation for him.

That’s because as of Friday, there are only 73 Democrats and one Republican (thanks, Justin Amash!) who want to start an impeachment inquiry. Moreover, a new poll shows that even though the number of Americans who want impeachment is up 10 points — which is a big jump — the vast majority still don’t want it. Only 27 percent think there’s enough to start that process.
But that’s just the House, which draws up impeachment. It takes the Senate, of course, to try the President on those charges, and two-thirds of that body must vote to convict and remove him. And guess which party controls the Senate? Yep, the Republicans. There’s no way in hell that two-thirds of that body, with Sen. Mitch McConnell as majority leader, will vote to convict Donald Trump.
Oh, but hope dies hard among the wacky Democrats. Rep. Rashida Tlaib still wants to “impeach the mother****er,” while Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted this on Friday:
This President needs to be impeached.

And of course there’s Rep. Maxine Waters, who’s just plain unhinged:
Low life Trump – lying, crooked, tax evader, porn star fornicator – should take his ridiculous self home, resign, and free us of what we will have to do to impeach him and throw him out of office!
— Maxine Waters (@RepMaxineWaters) May 28, 2019
In the private sector, billionaire Tom Steyer wants American citizens to come before Congress and tell how Trump has hurt them, or something.
But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expert at reading political tea leaves, and she knows that pushing impeachment will be a winning issue for Trump in 2020. She doesn’t have the votes in the House. The Senate would never vote to remove him, anyway. And voters who are sick to death of Democrats calling to remove the President and further dividing the country will produce a backlash that would easily propel Trump back into the White House.
No, Trump wouldn’t like the impeachment experience — no President would. But it would certainly put him on the path to wining re-election in 2020.

Not to mention retaking the House, which would be devastating for the Progressive wing.
