NYC Mayor has a solution for the influx of illegal immigrants coming into the city. If you have a spare bedroom, he has plans for that!

Mayor Eric Adams now wants to start paying every day New Yorkers to shelter migrants in their own homes – as the Big Apple struggles to find beds for the thousands of asylum seekers still flooding into the city.

In his latest attempt to battle the ongoing migrant crisis, Adams on Monday floated a half baked “private residence” plan, which could possibly see local homeowners getting compensation to put up asylum seekers.

Hizzoner put forward the proposal as he revealed religious leaders had agreed to start housing adult male migrants overnight at 50 places of worship scattered across the five boroughs next month.

Yes, you read that correctly. And no, it isn’t a joke. He’s serious about this.

There are already agreements in place to house single men at churches and other places of worship across the city. 

Religious leaders have offered up 50 faith-based locations to help house asylum seekers overnight across the five boroughs as part of a new two-year partnership with the New York Disaster Interfaith Services.

Each of those locations will cater for roughly 19 adult men.

“As we continue to tackle this humanitarian crisis, I’m proud that through this new partnership with New York Disaster Interfaith Services, New York City’s faith community will be able to provide shelter to asylum seekers in need at houses of worship throughout the five boroughs,” Adams said.

As you read the above, one realizes that these men will only have, at the moment, a one night stay at the church. And then what? Where will they go? I guess the hotels that have been turned into places for immigrant families to stay is out of the question. Especially given that some of the hotels have been thoroughly trashed by those staying there. 

So, what’s next? A stop in your spare bedroom! And you’ll get paid!! 

Except as he somewhat admits, and our friends over at Legal Insurrection have pointed out, there’s a rule in place regarding short-term rentals. 

Registration for Hosts
The Short-Term Rental Registration Law requires short-term rental hosts to register with the Mayor’s Office of Special Enforcement (OSE). Booking platforms (such as Airbnb, VRBO, Booking.com, and many others) are prohibited from allowing transactions for unregistered short-term rentals. There are penalties for both hosts and booking services who fail to comply with the requirements of the law.

Final rules for the program were published February 3, 2023, and the law took effect on March 6, 2023. The final rules and law are available in the “Registration Laws and Rules” section of this webpage.

OSE encourages you to review the Tips to Prepare for Registration and FAQ below before you apply for registration. Hosts wishing to determine the legality of their short-term rental should review their building’s legal occupancy, their lease or rental agreement, and state and city laws, and seek legal advice when necessary.

OOPS. That’s going to be an issue. Especially if someone staying there gets wind of that rule…

So what will the Mayor and City Hall do? Quickly write in an exception pertaining to just this one issue? I see that going over like a lead balloon. 

Furthermore, there is a great deal that can go wrong here. Due to the border being overrun, immigrants aren’t being thoroughly vetted. Will NYC have a vetting process in place? 

What happens if an immigrant attacks a homeowner, a landlord, or a member of the family? Will there be consequences? Or will the ‘commit a crime and receive no consequences’ hold for the illegal immigrants as well?

One of the other issues is that this will be regarded as a type of lease. So how long will the immigrant stay in your spare bedroom? That’s not being discussed at the moment. However, the law in NYC is clear, if someone is there past 30 days and refuses to leave, the homeowner or landlord is stuck like Chuck. 

Oh, but don’t worry about that! All the homeowners facing economic hardship will be THRILLED to lease out their spare bedroom in order to make a little extra cash! Right? RIIIGHT??

Keep in mind, New York City was proud to proclaim they are a sanctuary city. But now, after receiving some 70,000 illegals into the area, the reality is setting in.

Meanwhile, the flow of illegals arriving at our southern and even northern borders hasn’t slowed down. Biden’s open borders policy has build this mess. A mess leading to NYC Mayor Eric Adams wanting to park illegal immigrants in people’s spare bedrooms. 

Has he considered the liabilities involved? What about the homeowner’s insurance? If the place gets trashed, will insurance cover the damages? This half-baked idea carries LOTS of problems with it.  

Will the price be worth it? I highly doubt it.
