Late Sunday night, President Trump announced that he had chosen a new deputy director for the FBI – Dan Bongino.
After all, if new FBI Director Kash Patel is going to also be the acting director of the ATF, then he’s going to be one busy man who will need some serious help. Dan Bongino reposted President Trump’s Truth Social announcement on his own X account, confirming that he plans to accept the position.

Why do we need a new deputy director of the FBI? Well, when Christopher Wray announced that he would be resigning at the end of Biden’s term (to avoid being fired by Trump, as we all knew would happen), his deputy director, Paul Abbate, would have theoretically become acting director until a new one was confirmed. Except that Abbate, who was also singled out by Senator Chuck Grassley as needing to resign, did everyone a favor and retired from the FBI one day after Wray left. This has left a leadership gap that, understandably, President Trump wasn’t simply willing to fill by moving the next person in line up the ladder.
As the president mentions in his post, Dan Bongino has a long history in law enforcement, both in the NYPD and as a Secret Service agent. Notably, Bongino served on the protection details for both George W. Bush and Barack Obama before leaving to enter politics. He was never elected, but pivoted to become a commentator and podcaster, whose show now airs daily on radio stations across the country. It’s been announced that his show’s last day will be March 14th.
If Kash Patel is the “law,” then Dan Bongino is the “order.” As a former Secret Service agent, he had a LOT to say after the attempted assassination of President Trump, and asked hard questions in a Congressional forum – questions that Secret Service leadership at the time had no answers for.
After the election, Bongino’s name came up as a possible candidate for director of the Secret Service. That job eventually went to Sean Curran, head of Trump’s Secret Service detail. While Dan Bongino expressed concern over Curran being chosen, he has approved of Curran’s moves within the agency so far.
But choosing Dan Bongino, the Associated Press claims, means that Trump could weaponize the FBI!
The selection places two staunch Trump allies atop the nation’s premier federal law enforcement agency at a time when Democrats are concerned that the president could seek to target his adversaries. Bongino would serve under Kash Patel, who was sworn in as FBI director at the White House on Friday and who has signaled his intent to reshape the bureau, including by relocating hundreds of employees from its Washington headquarters and placing greater emphasis on the FBI’s traditional crime-fighting duties.
The deputy director serves as the FBI’s second-in-command and is traditionally a career agent responsible for the bureau’s day-to-day law enforcement operations.
Huh. I don’t remember the AP’s concern over the weaponization of the FBI under Joe Biden. Well, FAFO, as they say.
Sunday night’s announcement caught a lot of people off guard, but there was approval from within the administration…

As was the case with choosing Kash Patel and Pete Hegseth, all the right people are freaking out. Dan Bongino, with his law enforcement experience, makes plenty of sense as FBI deputy director – especially if the point is to return the FBI to being an investigative agency instead of the thoughtcrime police.
Welcome to the new version of “Law & Order” within the FBI.
