So it was meant to be an “interactive” art project at McCracken County High School in Paducah, Kentucky, re-creating “Dread” Scott Tyler’s 1989 project called “The Proper Way to Display an American Flag”. But as you can see from the photo below, there’s absolutely NOTHING in this art project about proper flag etiquette. In fact, students were actually encouraged to walk around on the American flag and then write “their reflections” on how they “felt” about standing on the flag which, of course, is desecration.
How do you not know this isn’t okay? What if the teacher, Shand Stamper, had used an Islamic flag? Or what about the Rainbow flag? BOOM. But no, she didn’t use either of those. And as you can imagine, the good and decent in the community were outraged. Two days after the so-called “art project”, here’s a portion of her public apology for the incident:
“I love our flag and the nation it stands for. I love the freedom I enjoy because of our brave veterans. I feel sick and deeply sad that through my actions I have dishonored these men and women and also poorly represented you all,” she wrote in a letter obtained by the newspaper. “(To say) I am devastated by my actions bringing outrage and negativity on you is a gross understatement.”
Please… just STFU lady.
Yes. I am very well aware that as an American, I (and you) can desecrate the flag. But see, I don’t want to as a matter of respect and love for our great country, those who have built it over the centuries, and those who fight for us. The flag of the United States is a symbol of our country. It also represents sacrifice. That very same flag is used to cover the caskets of our soldiers, sailors and Marines who have been killed in battle and it demonstrates a last measure of devotion during burial. It is NOT an art project!
Why does a teacher not know this? And what the hell is wrong with people?!?
There’s more. You can imagine the response from the district. The teacher’s principal says Shand Stamper simply “made an error in judgement”. Seriously? Is there any wonder why people home school their kids to avoid public schools if at all possible? Or seek to place their kids in charter and private schools to avoid this kind of stupidity and blatant disregard for teaching patriotism? Good grief! And apparently, since the teacher has apologized for her moronic jackassery er, “error in judgement” and the flag has been retired in a military ceremony, it’s all good. She can go back to her interactive art projects and teaching our kids.
Right?
