The news yesterday was big, dramatic, and overwhelming.
A civilian jet was shot out of the sky near the Ukraine-Russian border.
Israel launched a ground offensive against Hamas, after Hamas broke the “humanitarian” cease-fire.
And the President of the United States, the leader of the free world… had a hamburger, gave a quick speech, and then raised more money for his political party. The horror of a Malaysian Airlines flight being shot down with a missile got just about 40 seconds of his attention in public.
It’s not that the president isn’t around to answer that 3 a.m. phone call – he just wants someone else to take the message and he’ll get back to the international crises when he feels like it. We don’t know exactly when President Obama learned of the downed airplane – the Kremlin actually claims that it informed Obama during a phone call with Vladimir Putin – but we do know that it didn’t disrupt the president’s schedule at all. Nothing changed. He made all his fundraising stops and photo-ops, and then got back to the White House on schedule. Presumably, now, he’ll have time to attend to all these events which so inconsiderately broke into his previously scheduled fundraising time.
Even his own State Department can’t find it within themselves to make any kind of effort to care about breaking international news. After all, if the boss doesn’t care, why should they?
Seriously. This is the only thing State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki tweeted about regarding the Malaysian Airlines flight:
On reports of tragic Malaysian plane crash: at this time US do not have any confirmation of cause, individuals on plane or any addl details

And instead of, you know, working on providing any more details, like, say, the State Department might want to do, this is how she ended her day on Twitter:
Great piece by former colleague Alyssa Mastromonaco who defines smart, savvy and fashionable http://t.co/zJGlE5XKp6 via @washingtonpost

I am convinced that her inability to care about doing her job on a day like yesterday stems from the attitude of the president. After all, if he doesn’t worry, why should she?
This time, though, both sides of the aisle were justifiably stunned at the president’s nonchalant attitude toward a major international crisis. The right criticized him:
And the left stood there, stunned.
President Obama massively dropped the ball just now. 23 Americans killed and he says 'it looks like a terrible tragedy' then back to jokes?

Let me help, Mr President – it IS a terrible tragedy, and it's more probably mass murder of your citizens & many other nations' citizens.

There really should be no doubt about what President Obama thinks about his job, his life, and his place in this world at the moment. He. Does. Not. Care. So long as he gets to play golf, hobnob with rich people and celebrities, raise money to make sure that other Democrats are indebted to him, and gets all the perks of the Presidency without having to do any more work, then he simply can’t be bothered to care about the concerns of lesser mortals. So what if Putin supplied missiles to pro-Russian insurgents in Ukraine, which ended up accidentally taking down a civilian flight? So what if Hamas breaks a cease-fire and is hiding missiles in U.N.-run schools? So what if there’s a Marine still sitting in a Mexican prison? So what if the southern border is overrun by children?
It’s summertime, the grass is green, and those holes on the back nine ain’t gonna play themselves. The president has left the building, and we are on our own.
He’s never cared. He’s a long-winded empty suit. I’ve been saying for years he exhibits symptoms of antisocial personality disorder (he’s a sociopath).
Sound familiar?
I think a narcissist is, by definition, a sociopath. And, yes, that’s been a known for a looooooooong time.
For your information:
The story now is that only one person on board was an American – a dual citizen – and they were traveling on the other country’s passport, it seems.
The question of whether the “separatists” bragged about shooting this plane down have become more muddied. Some of the accounts are really from a shootdown of a cargo aircraft a day or two earlier. But I think some are not. So, accountability gets harder.
Malaysia is really good at getting information out……… *eyeroll*
The “separatists” have evidently been shooting at accident investigators that were trying to approach the site. But, it’s been compromised already. Questionable how much they will be able to get from it once it’s disturbed significantly.
This is a mess. Period. It’s war-triggering stuff. Which will really be too bad for Ukraine, because I’m pretty certain our current administration wouldn’t leap to their defense, nor even the defense of international peace. I’m also pretty certain none of them could find their azz with both hands, a map and a flashlight.
BTW, Deanna, you missed the obvious musical link with your last paragraph. “Summertime and the living is easy……….”

Good catch, GWB. That’s probably because the only song about summer I’ve been hearing for the last six months is one sung by an animated snowman. 😉
