Many know the basic storyline of 9/11: Twenty-five years ago tomorrow, nineteen men acting in the name of radical Islam hijacked four airliners and turned them into weapons. Nearly 3,000 people were murdered in New York, at the Pentagon, and in a field in Pennsylvania. The dead included office workers, firefighters, police officers, military personnel, children, and passengers who fought back.

Let’s further the story with a bit more truth: The attacks were not a metaphor, not some inevitable payback for American foreign policy, and not a teachable moment about American mistakes. They were mass murder planned and celebrated by an evil Islamic ideology that still exists. Our remembrance of September 11, 2001, starts with these plain facts and we refuse to whitewash any of it.

What Happened Was Not Ambiguous.

Al-Qaeda’s leaders were explicit. They hated American power, American presence in the Middle East, American support for Israel, and the very existence of a free society that did not submit to their Islamist version of Islam. The hijackers did not care whether the people in the towers voted Republican or Democrat, supported the then Iraq sanctions against the Saddam Hussein regime, or opposed them. They killed indiscriminately. Flight 93’s passengers and crew prevented an even larger body count by fighting back—an act of extraordinary courage that still stands as one of the clearest examples of American Exceptionalism and character under fire.

Any honest accounting of the events of that day keeps the focus there: the perpetrators, their ideology, and the victims. It does not begin with an elitist’s performative lecture about root causes that somehow always seems to end with American guilt.

The Left’s Persistent Effort to Dilute the Day.

Over the years a familiar pattern has repeated. Some voices on the left have worked overtime to relativize the attacks, to treat them as the predictable result of American “imperialism,” or to suggest that the real story is Islamophobia rather than the radically evil ideology that produced the hijackers. Even today we hear variants of the claim that “America had it coming” or that the proper response is national self-flagellation. That is not analysis. It is moral inversion.

Hard truth: people like Hasan Piker who say the United States “deserved” 9/11 are not offering a sophisticated foreign-policy critique. They are offering an excuse for mass murder. The same people who demand infinite nuancing to explain the terrorists, show zero patience for the security measures, military and law enforcement responses necessary to keep us safe and free.  If your first instinct after nearly three thousand civilians are murdered is to inventory American sins, you have revealed more about your priors than about the event.

None of this requires denying that American policy in the Middle East has been imperfect, that intelligence failures occurred, or that the subsequent decades of wars carried real costs. Conservatives have long debated those questions. That’s ok. However, that does require refusing to let the debate start from the premise that the victims were somehow the authors of their own deaths.

The Continuing Challenge.

The ideology that produced 9/11 did not evaporate on September 12, 2001. Variants of it continue to inspire attacks in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and occasionally on American soil. Open borders, weak-to-no vetting, and the reluctance in some quarters to name the ideology “evil” create new vulnerabilities. Pretending that the only remaining problem is “hate” directed at Muslims is a form of willful blindness. Most American Muslims are not the problem; the problem is the subset that embraces supremacist doctrines and the Western elites who treat criticism of those doctrines as the greater sin.

A serious country remembers its dead without apology, it secures its borders and skies without endless self-doubt, and it distinguishes between ordinary citizens of every background from the people who want to kill them.

That is not bigotry. It’s basic pattern recognition.

Looking Back Through the VG Archives.

For all of us who lived through September 11th, and the aftermath, we have an obligation and a burden to keep the events and stories of 9/11 ever close. We’ve gathered below a sampling of some of our Victory Girls articles — “The Stories of 9/11” if you will — from over the years that demonstrate both the abject evil and the uncommon courage witnessed on that day. We hope you pick out a few to read, and then pass on these stories to those who have come after. It’s an important part of our history and legacy, it deserves the highest moment of recognition, and should never become a distant memory, a diluted sound bite, or an obscure footnote.

No matter the circumstances and difficulties we face as a nation these days, on this of all days, we hope you choose to live your life to the fullest — because of them. Always be vigilant. Always do something if you see something. And always bear witness of that day. Tell the stories of the innocent lives lost, the courage of those who ran toward danger, and those who have taken the fight to the enemy for 25+ long years.
