Chicago Mayor Stomps Foot and Demands Cash Now!
Chicago Mayor Stomps Foot and Demands Cash Now!
Chicago’s mini-mayor is stomping mad, and making demands of Senate Majority leader McConnell to show me the money! The ire of the Mayor’s mini meltdown is misplaced.
When politicians behave like children, my inner Theodor Geisel longs to break free. Waxing prose about tiny tyrants stomping their petite podal parts. Sometimes life imitates art, and the alliteration writes itself. Take for example, Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot.
Ms. Lightfoot is getting heavy-handed in her demands for Federal
bailouts relief, or COVID cash. She is blaming Senator McConnell and the Republicans for delaying the latest raid on our children’s future, aka “Covid stimulus” round three or four or thirty-two….? I’ve lost count after the “must pass now to save the nation” bill included funding for the Kennedy Center. Mayor Lightfoot demands,
I know that there’s a lot of posturing that goes on in Washington, D.C., but dear God, stop the nonsense… Get something done. We are hurting here in the heartland and all across our country and we need the federal government to step up and do their job.”
Let’s unpack this statement, shall we? Posturing you say? In DC?! Shocking. Is Lightfoot implying that a United States Representative would put party goals ahead of the national welfare? It should be criminal to use a crisis in order to effect change (cough, cough) Nancy Pelosi, familiar with the “Chicago Way”, did exactly this very thing to help get Sleepy Joe Biden out of his basement and into the White House basement. I agree mayor, posturing at the expense of American’s welfare is “nonsense.”
Now, let’s address the last part of your statement, “We are hurting here in the heartland…” You and Governor “Silver Spurs” Pritzker are directly responsible for putting the hurt on your citizens. Excessive overreach and lockdowns have burdened your citizens with a lodestone of economic impact. You are just now entering phase IV, with its onerous restrictions on business operations. Food Service and Bars, the backbone of small businesses, are obligated to the following requirements,
No indoor service
- Outdoor service can continue, with group sizes limited to no more than 6 individuals and tables spaced at least 6-ft apart
- Outdoor service includes:
o Rooms with retractable roofs
o Multi-party structures, such as tents, with at least 50% of walls open
o Single-party structures, such as igloos, with proper ventilation
o Tables within eight feet of a wall that is at least 50% open
• No private events
Yes, fall in Chicago, standing in a parking lot under an open tent. Exactly where I want to eat dinner. Especially with the temps in the 30’s this week. I’m flummoxed as to why your small businesses aren’t raking in the money, and their employees are “hurting.”
Now, the last part. You “need (I suspect you really mean “expect”) the federal government to step up and do its job.” What exactly is its “job” in regards to your city? Last I checked, mayors don’t appreciate the feds encroaching on their turf. Remember the
riots, um “peaceful looting” over the summer? When Federal law enforcement was coming to help stem the unprecedented violence plaguing your city? You said,
We need everybody in our city, to be the eyes and ears on this thing, because we are not going to allow democracy to be hijacked by the federal government. That is not happening in Chicago.”
It appears that your mayoral philosophy is akin to, “I want your financial support, but don’t tell me how to live my life!” Very similar to that of an entitled teenager. But Lori, sweetie, the federal government isn’t meant to bail you out from the ramifications of your bad decisions. Democracy doesn’t work that way, and incidentally neither does our Republic. I think you need to walk over to the nearest Hyatt hotel and ask to speak to a manager, JB Pritzker. He’s based out of a Florida equestrian estate, but visits Illinois on occasion. Incidentally, you may not know, Florida is not under lockdown and their economy is on track for a faster than average recovery!
Oh, the bitch about Mitch! Isn’t this just all his fault!? The Senate Majority leader, whoa! Senate spending bills must pass through the House. I’m sure the House Republican major… Yeah, no. My mistake, the House Democrat majority, the Republicans are the minority. House Speaker, Democrat, Nancy Pelosi would never politicize an emergency… oh yeah she would actually. Pretend that Congress isn’t sharply divided, and the Democrats are actually open to negotiations- the House would craft a compromise bill with concessions to alleviate the concerns of their opposition. But instead, we have a group who is willing to hold their breath until they pass out. Just like children.
Mitch isn’t being partisan about withholding federal funds from state coffers. His state of Kentucky has significant financial burdens, further impacted by COVID. In fact, Kentucky has higher liability than Illinois,
Pension costs are one of the biggest drags on states’ fiscal health, and Illinois has one of the worst-funded public pensions in the nation — just 38.4 percent funded as of 2017, according to a Pew Charitable Trusts report in 2019. McConnell’s home state of Kentucky, at 33.9 percent, had the lowest public pension funding ratio in the nation.”
He’s actually being fiscally responsible to the national budget. Democrats like to spend all the money. When it runs out, they just print more. Unfortunately this strategy has negative results and lasting impacts. Specifically, becoming further indebted to China. So stomp your feet. Hold your nose until you pass out. When you regain consciousness get to work opening up your city. Yes, there is risk. But in keeping it closed there is certainty. Certainty of prolonged negative economic impacts for your citizens. And that isn’t the fault of anyone but you and Gov. Pritzker.
