AOC Knows Her Target Demographic Is Kids

AOC Knows Her Target Demographic Is Kids

You can say many things about Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, aka AOC to everyone but Mike Pence, including that she’s a radical socialist. But she IS very, very good at social media outreach.

And the right does itself a disservice if we ignore how AOC is reaching out to people who cannot even vote yet.

On Tuesday night, AOC streamed herself on Twitch, playing the hot game “Among Us.” Now, if that sentence made no sense to you, you probably don’t have young people in your life to try and explain this, or you aren’t a “gamer.” Twitch is an online streaming service that allows people to play video games virtually with others on their platform. “Among Us” is the online game of the moment – think of it as a combination of “Alien,” “Clue,” and “Survivor“. The website for the game describes it this way:

One crewmate has been replaced by a parasitic shapeshifter. Their goal is to eliminate the rest of the crew before the ship reaches home. The Impostor will sabotage the ship, sneak through vents, deceive, and frame others to remain anonymous and kill off the crew.”

While everyone is fixing up the ship, no one can talk to maintain anonymity. Once a body is reported, the surviving crew will openly debate who they think The Impostor is. The Impostor’s goal is to pretend that they are a member of the crew. If The Impostor is not voted off, everyone goes back to maintaining the ship until another body is found. If The Impostor is voted off, the crew wins!”

Just how popular is this game? Well, if my anecdotal evidence of the number of teenagers who are looking for spacesuits and helmets to wear for Halloween is any indication, it IS the hottest new online game out there. I have lots of personal experience with this game as well, because in the age of social distancing and COVID, teenagers are connecting with their friends to play online games. Even a non-gamer can understand and play “Among Us” and have a good time. My teenage daughter plays it almost nightly with her close group of friends.

Enter AOC, who is no dummy when it comes to using social media to reach out to young people.

And then this happened.

And then over 400,000 viewers showed up to watch.

With 439,000 viewers at its peak, the Twitch stream was the third-highest viewed for an individual gamer.”

The record is held by singer Drake, who was watched by more than 600,000 people , as he played Fortnite.”

Representative Ocasio-Cortez’s stream lasted about three and a half hours.”

The congresswoman amassed more than 550,000 followers – more than any of her political counterparts on the platform.”

Now, you might be tempted to brush this off as nothing more than a stunt to get out the vote. You are partially right, and you are partially wrong. Yes, the immediate goal for AOC and Ilhan Omar is to get out the vote. The long-term goal is much, much more insidious.

While we can’t know the demographics of who showed up to watch AOC play “Among Us” on Twitch, we know that there had to be thousands of teenagers who are not old enough to vote. And now they have just seen a politician who is young enough to play “their” game while talking to them about her political perspectives. Suddenly, AOC is “cool.” Ilhan Omar becomes “cool.” AOC is not stupid. She knows the demographic for “Among Us” are teens. She is laying the groundwork for being the politician that they like, and therefore, blindly follow, later in their lives. This is dangerous, because while AOC is talking directly to teenagers on Twitch about universal health care, what is the right doing?

I actually went and asked my daughter – who is nearly 17, and whose favorite modern president is Ronald Reagan, so I know I’ve done something right – if there were any politicians on the right who could command the kind of Twitch following that AOC just pulled in. She drew a blank. I suggested Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina, but she didn’t know who he is (and to be fair, we live across the country and Cawthorn is in a competitive race to even be elected to Congress). Her only suggestion was that someone like Ben Shapiro might be able to do that kind of outreach, but no one else came to mind for her.

The right has a problem. We may have a much deeper bench of talent running for office, but we are failing in cultural outreach to the next generation. AOC knows her seat is secure in New York. She knows she is gaining, not losing, influence and power. Chuck Schumer is looking deeply afraid of being primaried from the LEFT by AOC, and they both know it. And now she is talking directly with teenagers, who come away from this Twitch stream thinking about how cool AOC is while she plays “Among Us” while introducing them to her socialist worldview.

Andrew Breitbart said that “politics is downstream from culture” and he understood that almost better than anyone else on the right. AOC knows it too. That’s why she was on Twitch, playing “Among Us” in front of future voters who now think favorably about her. The right needs to get its act together on the culture and start reaching out. That is the war we are currently losing without even fielding a champion.

correction: she is not good at it……she is protected by it….and that is a problem even bigger than aoc. she is a nobody and will remain a nobody. she is plant, just like barry and joe and kamilla most of the attorneys general in America. She and her scraggly three newts and frogs will be gone sooner than they think.

we are failing in cultural outreach to the next generation
We are failing in passing on ANY sort of wisdom or making ANY sort of connection with later generations. We have to re-capture education and culture to re-capture their hearts and minds. (We do not have to re-capture public schools and Hollywood, if we can break the PS and Hollywood monopolies.)

AOC knows her seat is secure in New York.
Until it gets re-districted out of existence. Maybe.

    “politics is downstream from culture”
Especially when your politics has become a religion. Because culture is downstream from worldview/religion.

Excellent observation! We saw Robert O’Rourke try this sort of outreach in Texas with his attempts at skateboarding. Fortunately he came across as a dorky good.

AOC, though, knows how to connect with the younger generation because she still acts like a 16-yr old.
