We are still waiting for any word from the grand jury in Ferguson, Missouri. While some are demonstrating even without a verdict – maybe just to keep themselves in practice and ready for when an announcement finally IS made – others are waiting, and waiting, and waiting.

And the media is busy covering the demonstrations and the waiting. As a result, the media made itself the story last night when a reporter from the Los Angeles Times got injured during the demonstration.

Two band-aids from the “protest medics” (yes, they’ve apparently brought their own medics) and he’s all better. And this was all the news on Sunday night – that a reporter got himself hit in the head with a rock.

I’m almost at the point where I think the grand jury might be trying to outlast the protesters. Others are starting to ask the same question.

“People feel like it’s been engineered, so that the results wouldn’t come out until after the election and until the weather got cold, and it would be more difficult to protest,” said Susan McGraugh, supervisor of the Criminal Defense Clinic at the Saint Louis University School of Law. “It’s really adding fuel to the fire.”

There was already plenty of fuel for the fire, no matter when the announcement is made. President Obama, in a pre-taped interview released on Sunday, urged for calm after the verdict.

“First and foremost, keep protests peaceful,” Obama told ABC. “This is a country that allows everybody to express their views, allows them to peacefully assemble, to protest actions that they think are unjust, but using any event as an excuse for violence is contrary to rule of law and contrary to who we are.”

I sincerely doubt that those already assembled in Ferguson and St. Louis will heed the president’s words. Especially with the reports out that two men who claim to be affiliated with the New Black Panther Party were arrested on weapons charges, with the implication that the weapons that were to be purchased would be used in post-verdict riots.

My sympathies at this point lie with the population in and around Ferguson, whose entire lives are being held hostage by the waiting. And who knows at this point if there will even be a verdict this week, especially with the Thanksgiving holiday coming? We here at Victory Girls will continue to update this story as events unfold. But we all still may be in for a long wait.
