Is this the tipping point for the Trump administration? Between unpaid federal workers (despite bills voted down by Democrats that would have paid them) and restricted operations at LaGuardia airport in New York, President Trump has offered a half-measure, which GOP senators had suggested.

The announcement came from the Rose Garden.

President Trump said Friday that he will support a short-term spending bill to re-open the government, temporarily ending the partial government shutdown that has dragged on for more than a month — despite a day earlier saying Republicans would not “cave” on his demands for funding for a wall on the southern border.

“I am very proud to announce we have reached a deal to end the shutdown and reopen the federal government,” he said to applause from gathered Cabinet members.

He said the deal would keep the government open for three weeks until Feb. 15 and that a bill would go before the Senate immediately. He made reference to his previous threats to declare a national emergency, calling it a “very powerful weapon,” but saying he didn’t want to use it. The deal appeared to include no money for a wall or steel barrier, but he said he hoped negotiations would continue to come to an agreement on wall funding.

“Walls should not be controversial,” he said.

In short, the government will reopen, as is, with a continuing resolution, for three weeks. President Trump pledged that the federal workers would receive their back pay as soon as possible. There will be a bipartisan committee formed to put together a Homeland Security package – which the president fully intends to contain funding for a wall/barrier/physical blocking point/whatever it will be called – to increase southern border security.

As of right now, President Trump is NOT using the national emergency card, but he is holding it in reserve unless he gets what he wants in this yet-to-be-written Homeland Security package. And he said that either he gets his wall, or the government shuts down again in three weeks. And then he will use the national emergency power.

Reactions were not favorable to the president.

Right now, Senator Lindsey Graham is begging the Democrats to come to the table and negotiate in good faith.

So, does this round really go to Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats? Unless these coming three weeks end with a deal that Trump and his supporters like, history will record that the president was the one who blinked – and lost.

“If he gives in now, that’s the end of 2019, in terms of him being an effective president,” Graham said. “That’s probably the end of his presidency,” he added.

Trump is the chess master and these dems can’t even play checkers. He’ll give them the 3 weeks, let the unnecessary fed employees get paid, and spend the time trying to negotiate. This will fail, as expected, because Chuck and Nancy won’t give an inch. So he’ll prove that they’re lying sacks of poo, and will then push the National Emergency button. And I hope he uses that time to get the lame GOP in line, so they for once they all spout the same talking point – that the Dems lied on this and didn’t negotiate in good faith – and every elected GOP in the country makes a public speech about it every day. Let the media try and ignore that! Then lower the boom, and call these commie traitors out. If you haven’t yet read Greenfield’s latest essay at Sultan Knish please do. Best thing I’ve read on the Wall and the leftist vision in years.

“…a half-measure, which GOP senators had suggested.”

Par for the course for the GOP. Too many times they try the play-not-to-lose route and more often than not end up losing anyway.

If I was a government worker and I was smart (bear with me) I’d look at that 3 weeks as 3 paid weeks to find another job outside of government.

  • Bevo Francis says:

This will not end well. Pelosi cannot give in unless she is willing to lose her job. Schumer is still a dumb anti-American.

The entire Congress caused this beginning is 1986 when Reagan gave millions amnesty in exchange for borders security that Congress never delivered. Now, Congress is incapable to overcome the leftists socialists demand for open borders.

    Adios, America.

  • Tom G says:

The Dems are not serious about border security, they do not want a Wall.

Trump “wants” a Wall — one supported by the whole GOP, and many Dems.
The GOP senators, especially, are key.

A deal happens when there is a win-win.
This looks like a win for the Dems. Now. Certainly not a Trump win.
That should make it easier to let Trump have a Wall, and a win, later.

    We won’t know, until later.

This is not a loss for Trump until he stops making it an issue.

      There is no “Later”
The Clock will run out. The Time Is Now.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Dims have no intention of negotiating in good faith. Anyone who has ever read Peanuts for more than a month knows what it is about to happen. Sure Trump could then declare a State of Emergency, and courts will then block it. Far, far better to just build the wall. Gather up all the unspent, appropriated funds and just do it. Order the Army Corps of Engineers into the field.

    • DDmeow says:

“Sure Trump could then declare a State of Emergency, and courts will then block it.”

Not so fast. Trump Admin has already got cleared that they can ignore any court order and proceed with this action as it is a National Emergency declaration with clear evidence of an armed cartel threat at the border. When the cartels are posting videos of ambushing State Police, it is clear that Mexico has entered the kinetic violent realm of Chechnya and not a peaceful Nation on our border…

  • CombatMissionary says:

Trump looks big to regular Americans by taking care of them in the short term and emphasizing that he’s trying to get a deal from everyone.

Pelosi owns the next shutdown in three weeks because she’s dumb enough to think she’s winning and won’t budge.

Then Trump uses emergency powers to build the wall. He’s stolen support from the opposition and gotten what he wanted. Again. How many times does he have to beat the opposition before you guys figure out how he plays the game?

No effing idea how you come to this conclusion. EVERYONE who has watched the last 2 years of Rhino & Dem operations has clearly realized that the only thing that could be viably done was the Declaration of a National Emergency. Where have YOU been?
