Tom Kean Jr.’s Absence Highlights Washington’s Ghosting Problem

Washington has developed a strange habit over the last few years. Politicians disappear from public view, and staffers issue vague statements. Everybody sort of stands around pretending this is perfectly normal way to run a government. Now it’s happening again with Tom Kean Jr, the New Jersey Republican congressman. He has not cast a House vote since March 5.

It’s being reported he is dealing with a serious but temporary health issue. Hopefully he will make a full recovery soon. Nobody wants to mock somebody being sick. But we still have to ask, what is going on here?

People are naturally asking questions. Disappearing from Congress over two months is not exactly a minor thing.

Washington’s “Soon” Problem

Americans have gotten used to these conversations, sadly, surrounding politicians in their late 70s and 80s. Washington practically runs on Metamucil and soft food at this point.

But a relatively young congressman suddenly vanishing from public life?  With almost no visibility, it feels unusual, especially when even party leadership seems unable to explain much beyond “he’ll hopefully return soon.”

“We’re expecting him back here soon. He’s had a medical issue and he’s gonna be fully transparent and disclose all that,” Johnson told reporters. “I mean, that’s what he told me. But I don’t even know the details, and I have to respect that.” – NJ.com

The public gets these weird half-updates where everybody says not to worry, everything is under control, details are private, and the congressman is expected back eventually. Meanwhile, constituents are left with sitting there wondering whether their representative is actually functioning in the role they were elected to perform.

And Kean Sr. said his son probably won’t make a comeback overnight.

In a phone interview with NJ.com on May 15, the elder Kean described his son’s condition as a “serious” illness and said he is currently under the care of a doctor away from home.

Kean Sr. cautioned that a full return to form won’t happen overnight. “Any time you’ve been through a serious illness, you can’t be 100% the day you get back,” he said. “You’re gonna be able to do things, but gradually ramping up.”

Asked if he understands constituents wanting to know more about his son’s condition, Kean Sr. said: “I understand that.”

The former governor was similarly optimistic in comments to CNN, saying it “took a real illness to knock out” Kean Jr. but that it “won’t linger” and is “not some kind of disease that’s going to incapacitate him in the future.”

“The consensus is that he will be 100% OK,” Kean Sr. told CNN. – NJ.com

Also not reassuring. Kean Jr is under the care of a physician, away from home. But glad to know the “consensus” is that he will be 100% OK.

Americans Have Seen This Before

People watched the slow and painful decline of Dianne Feinstein while staffers and political allies kept insisting everything was fine right up until it very obviously was not.

Voters watched John Fetterman disappear for treatment shortly after taking office.

Americans also sat through those deeply uncomfortable public freeze-ups involving Mitch McConnell while the political class acted offended that anyone even noticed.

Then there were all the questions surrounding Kay Granger and her long absence from Congress.

So when you start seeing aides carrying multiple cell phones and issuing press releases, it might be time to check on your congressman’s whereabouts.

Between the missing scientists headlines and Congress members disappearing for months at a time, America is beginning to feel like one giant unsolved mystery podcast.

The Public Is Not Asking For Medical Charts

The public is not demanding private medical records. Nobody is asking lawmakers to livestream doctor appointments. Constituents simply want to know whether the person they elected is actively capable of doing the job.

Only seems reasonable.

In Kean’s case, the questions feel even more legitimate because this is not some irrelevant congressional seat tucked away where nobody is paying attention. New Jersey’s 7th District remains one of those closely watched suburban districts both parties care about heading into the 2026 midterms. No matter how much Mike Johnson wants Republicans to stop sounding like panicans about it.

Washington Wants Everyone To Pretend This Is Normal

Washington increasingly operates through carefully managed optics where everybody speaks in half-sentences and vague reassurances while voters are left trying to piece together what is actually going on.

And maybe Americans would not side-eye this stuff so much if it had not happened over and over again the last few years. Missing lawmakers. Frozen press conferences. Public officials wandering through interviews looking confused while aides hover nearby like nervous babysitters at a daycare pickup line.

Ten years ago, a sitting congressman disappearing for months would have dominated headlines. Now it barely survives a news cycle because Americans have become so used to strange behavior from Washington that another missing politician almost feels routine.

A sitting member of Congress vanishing from public life for weeks at a time probably should not feel this routine by now.

Maybe Tom Kean Jr. fully recovers and returns next week. Hopefully he does. At the very least, voters deserve more than another round of political fog and awkward reassurance from people carrying six cell phones.
