Today, Officer Weijian Liu will be honored at his funeral in Brooklyn, and then laid to rest.

The “without incident” remark comes in the aftermath of the funeral of Officer Rafael Ramos, where many NYPD officers turned their backs on Mayor de Blasio as he delivered remarks during the funeral service.

In fact, the cold shoulder shunning from the NYPD was such a huge statement that Commissioner William Bratton issued a memo begging the police rank and file to not embarrass the mayor like that again.

And this weekend police Commissioner William Bratton sent a memo to all commands urging respect, declaring “a hero’s funeral is about grieving, not grievance.”

On Saturday, officers standing outside the Brooklyn funeral home where Liu was displayed dressed in full uniform in an open casket saluted as the mayor and commissioner entered.

De Blasio will deliver remarks at Liu’s funeral.

It remains to be seen if the police in attendance will take direction from Bratton, or if they will continue to make their point to de Blasio’s face by turning their backs. Regardless, this is a moment to honor Officer Liu and the huge turnout is testifying to the fact that his and Officer Ramos’s murders have resonated deeply with his fellow officers…

… and within the community that they served, where some are paying their respects to try and begin to heal.
