NYC Mayor Clueless About National Guard

NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio rejected calls for the National Guard to be deployed in the city to help quell the violence and looting. The peaceful protests in the wake of the Minneapolis police murder of George Floyd have been overshadowed by the, I believe, paid protesters who are destroying NYC. The police need help, but the National Guard is a no go.

Why doesn’t Bill DeBlasio want the New York State Army National Guard to assist the police in restoring order to the streets of New York City? His explanation from the New York Post:

“No, we do not need, nor do we think it’s wise for the National Guard to be in New York City, nor any armed forces,” de Blasio told reporters during his daily City Hall press briefing, adding, “When outside armed forces go into communities, no good comes of it. We have seen this for decades.”

“No on the National Guard!” he later repeated. “We will regret it if we bring outside armed forces.”

Oh my stars and garters, not since New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said the Bill of Rights was above his pay grade, two whole months ago, has any elected official said anything more ignorant. DeBlasio and Murphy are living examples of the Peter Principle. Each man has risen to the level of his incompetence and is overmatched by the job. For DeBlasio, before becoming the mayor of the (formerly) greatest city in the world, he was on city council and a public advocate. Apparently, nowhere along this route did he learn squat about the National Guard.

Here is the video where DeBlasio says why he doesn’t want the National Guard in NYC:

He actually says he knows history. He doesn’t shite about history. The National Guard cannot be called “outside forces”. The National Guard is the local community. The New York Army National Guard is made up of, wait for it, New Yorkers. Then, DeBlasio says that the National Guard is not trained for police work in NYC. Maybe, the Mayor is too busy virtue signalling to do an internet search. Here, I have done it for the giant weasel, Army National Guard Military Occupational Specialty 31B Military Police:

Military police protect the lives and property on Army National Guard installations by enforcing military laws and regulations. They also control traffic, prevent crime and respond to all emergencies.

-Basic warrior skills and use of firearms
-Military/civil laws and jurisdiction
-Investigating and collecting evidence
-Traffic and crowd control
-Arrest and restraint of suspects

I am spitballing here but, the NYPD could take the lead and the National Guard could act as back up and work as adjuncts to the police. But, what really seems to set off DeBlasio is the idea that the National Guard would be carrying loaded weapons. Oh, the horror. New York City may have 36,000 police officers, but they have got to be getting tired. Plus, 30 officers have been injured in the last few days of rioting.

DeBlasio is a clueless fool. Good thing he is term limited. NYC cannot survive much more of this. He calls for community and faith leaders to come out and call for peace. Yeah, antifa is going to stop throwing bricks because a block association leaders asks them not to throw bricks.

NYC needs the National Guard. The Guard would help the NYPD dominate the space and would bring a show of force. Those who are violent, those who are not there to protest police brutality and remember George Floyd, would get the message pretty darn quickly.

    Good post as usual!

    Let me just repeat what I posted on an earlier Marta post about media bias and see if it fits here. “One nit to pick … you assume that George Floyd was murdered [“… outright disgusting misconduct such as the murder of George Floyd, ….”] While Chauvin has been charged with 3rd degree murder, he has also been charged in the alternative with manslaughter. Not to get too far into the weeds with the elements of the crime of murder vs. manslaughter, suffice to say you don’t possess sufficient facts to make that determination. Neither do any of us at this point since investigative journalism is a thing of the past.” While you may have softened it slightly with “… in the wake of the Minneapolis police murder of George Floyd …,” it still accepts the “hands up don’t shoot” narrative being pushed by the “protesters” and their media adjunct. How about we wait for all the facts and not just a video before we disregard a “presumption of innocence.” Am I talking to wall on this? Otherwise, good post ;>}

    nor any armed forces
Ummm, dude, the NYC and NY state police are “armed forces”.

When outside armed forces go into communities, no good comes of it.
I agree. And that’s why I’ve advocated for a decade or more to lower the level of responsibility for the police down to the lowest level possible, and to only allow police who live in their precinct (generally) to patrol it. Make the people of that set of neighborhoods responsible for their own policing.

But, something really important here: calling in the National Guard is expressly because they are outsiders, since your “insiders” have failed to do the damn job. They’re not being called in because you need more manpower. They’re being called in BECAUSE YOU FAILED.

The New York Army National Guard is made up of, wait for it, New Yorkers.
Yes. But not necessarily NY City residents. Camoed-up dudes with rifles from Rochester will definitely be considered “outsiders” by folks in the Bronx.

the National Guard is not trained for police work in NYC
Well, that’s probably true. The NG folks are much less likely to be selling drugs, taking bribes, and they definitely haven’t been trained how to tackle fare jumpers. (Yes, that’s all a bit slanderous of NYC cops, but only a bit.)

the National Guard would be carrying loaded weapons
    And the NYC do NOT?!

He calls for community and faith leaders to come out and call for peace.
That’s not wrong. Just kind of toothless without also busting heads that need busting.

Yes, NYC needs the National Guard. Or SAC. It’s the only way to be sure.
