Gavin Newsom, governor of California, really really really REALLY wants to be running for president right now, but can’t.

The reason he can’t, of course, is because there is a corrupt old man and a cackling airhead standing in front of him, and he doesn’t have enough clout within the Democrat party to just run them over. Joe Biden announcing his reelection campaign put an end to Gavin Newsom’s dreams for 2024. However, I do think that if something happened to Biden and rendered him obviously incapable of being president – like a fall he doesn’t get back up from without injury – then Newsom would happily body-check Kamala Harris (so much for his lip service to intersectionality!) to take a run at the nomination.

But as things stand right now, Gavin Newsom is sitting on the sidelines of the national races, king of his royal blue state, and picking fights with Governor Ron DeSantis, who IS running for president and of whom Newsom is bitterly jealous. DeSantis is doing what Newsom wants to do, so when Governor Hair Gel starts ranting on Twitter about gun laws in Florida that aren’t in place yet when a mass shooting happened, or DeSantis sending migrants to California and threatening “kidnapping” charges (even though the migrants are happy to go to California), recognize that this is all coming from a deeply envious place. Newsom deeply resents having to wait his turn because Biden’s team (but mostly Jill) is propping the old man up for another run.

So as he waits, Newsom is busy positioning himself to the left of Biden. His most recent idea was announced this morning. How about a new gun control amendment???

Wow, what a slick little video he has all ready for this. Tell me you’re running for president without telling me you’re running for president. Newsom even went on the Today Show, with them promoting the whole thing on Twitter as a “historic announcement.” Um, okay? Historic? Really??

This is Newsom’s proposal, in his extended tweet.

The 28th will enshrine 4 widely supported gun safety freedoms — while leaving the 2nd Amendment intact:

1) Raising the minimum age to purchase a gun to 21

2) Universal background checks

3) A reasonable waiting period for gun purchases

4) Banning the civilian purchase of assault weapons

Raise your hands if you see any problems with those “gun safety freedoms,” class. As many on Twitter were quick to point out, Newsom is openly acknowledging that his proposals are not currently constitutional.

For example, raising the minimum age to 21 for gun purchases? There is currently a federal court case in Virginia (Fraser v. ATF) which struck down federal law banning 18 to 20 year olds from owning handguns just last month. Presumably, it will be appealed by the government and continue working its way up the legal food chain to the Supreme Court – which is why Newsom wants it in his “amendment.” Should we even talk about the definition of “assault weapons”? You know, the thing that even the current ATF director can’t define?

Top men, everyone. Top. Men.

But back to Governor Lockdown Hypocrite. This proposed “amendment” has no chance of passing Congress, so he wants to have an Article V convention of the states.

To pass the 28th Amendment, Newsom and California lawmakers would need to initiate a nationwide convention to propose the measures to the U.S. Constitution. Two-thirds of all U.S. statehouses would need to agree to the initial meeting, and another three-quarters would need to support the amendment for it to become law.”

But Republicans, who control more than half of state legislatures, are unlikely to support the move, and no constitutional amendment proposed by a state has ever become law.”

Newsom, however, said he would soon begin cultivating support for the amendment in state legislatures and insisted the proposal is not doomed, arguing there’s bipartisan support for the measures in his proposal.”

And he’s totally NOT doing this because he has presidential aspirations!

I’m sorry, the bullshit meter just exploded and is a smoking heap of debris on the floor. Of course Gavin Newsom wants to be president! That’s why he’s publicly challenging Ron DeSantis, and staying well clear of the Dianne Feinstein health controversy and who he would appoint as a potential replacement. Newsom is currently trying to build his national profile and his brand, and is sticking to the left of Joe Biden to do it, while totally ignoring the black hole of crime and homelessness and political mismanagement that his own state has become.

Will this “28th Amendment” stunt hurt Gavin Newsom in California? The man survived a recall after being a COVID dictator, so no, this won’t hurt him at home. Will it raise his national profile? Yes, because the media are slobbering and eager to elevate him, knowing that he stands in the wings should Biden fall down and not get back up. Is Newsom able to win a Democrat primary? Absolutely – the bench is pretty thin. Will he get a chance to go for it in 2024? Highly unlikely at this point, but there may come a time when a Democrat primary suddenly becomes Kamala Harris versus Gavin Newsom. Which means that even though Gavin Newsom and his “28th Amendment” are a joke today, we can never, ever let our guard down.
