What an interesting and brilliant choice. Darline Graham Nordone will step into her brother Lindsey’s role as U.S. Senator for the remainder of his term.
Darline Graham Nordone was picked Monday to serve out the term of her late brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), who died suddenly over the weekend.
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster (R) announced Graham Nordone’s appointment from the statehouse in Columbia, hours after President Donald Trump publicly called for her to fill the vacancy.
A mother of two who has never held elected office, Graham Nordone was a political confidante of her older brother, who helped raise her after their parents died. She often appeared in Graham’s campaign advertisements and, when he ran for president in 2015, Graham, who never married, said his sister could play the role of first lady.
Lindsey and Darline were very close. Especially given the fact that their mother died of Hodgkins Lymphoma when Darline was 11, and their father suddenly died of a heart attack a little over a year later.
It was 1976 when Lindsey Graham and his sister lost their mother to cancer. Just 15 months later, their father died of a heart attack.
Mr. Graham was 22. His sister was just 13. Darline Graham Nordone said over the years that on the day their father died, she stood terrified of what it meant to be an orphan.
She recalled Mr. Graham running to grab her, pulling her in for a hug.
“He was like ‘I am so sorry, but it’s going to be OK. I’m going to take care of you,’” Ms. Nordone said in a recent video recollecting the moment. “And he did. He’s always been there for me.”
The bond between brother and sister became particularly public as Mr. Graham, who never married or had children of his own, grew into a national political figure. She introduced him as he launched a run for the White House and vouched for him as a man of integrity who could help his constituents as he had long helped her.
Lindsey ended up adopting his sister so she could utilize his military benefit including health care and the GI bill. She’s been by his side and was active during every campaign.

Keep in mind, this is a short term appointment to fill the gap until a special election later next year. What is brilliant about this is that Darline has no dog in the fight as it were. She’ll do her best to fill her brother’s shoes.
Already there are people whining from the cheap seats about this move. Family?? You can’t nominate family members to take over someone’s seat??!! How dare you??
Its not just republicans. Its not new or uncommon. Its temporary. pic.twitter.com/wVcFUMo7XQ

Cry harder Jena. This has been a factor across both political parties since the 1920’s after the 19th Amendment was ratified.
As I mentioned above, this is a brilliant move. Why? Because it takes politics out of the equation. Namely people like Nancy Mace, who started jockeying for the Senate seat less than 5 hours after Graham’s death was announced.
I wholeheartedly support the President in his recommendation. What a wonderful idea! pic.twitter.com/rBwk8aTSlj

Now Nancy and others are free to toss their hats into the ring and campaign over these next months for Lindsey’s Senate seat.
The filing period for the special election will open July 21 and last one week. A primary will take place Aug. 11, and if no candidate wins outright, there will be a runoff on Aug. 25.
Several prominent South Carolina Republicans have expressed interest in running for the seat, including Rep. Nancy Mace, Rep. Ralph Norman and Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, all of whom lost the competitive gubernatorial primary last month.
Meanwhile, Darline will mourn her brother, lay him to rest, and get to work on behalf of South Carolina.
