On February 10, 2015 it was confirmed that 26 year old Kayla Mueller, an aid worker with from Prescott, Arizona had been murdered by ISIS. The White House response was to issue a statement celebrating this young lady’s life but said nothing about going after ISIS and wiping them off the face of the earth.
Tonight on 20/20 Kayla’s family and other hostages will tell us the rest of the story, some of which you can read here. It is a story of the courage, compassion, and extraordinary faith she exhibited in the face of extreme fear, constant terror, and pain.
American hostage Kayla Mueller was tortured, verbally abused, forced into slave labor for ISIS commanders in Syria and raped by the group’s top leader, but her fellow hostages say she never surrendered hope, she selflessly put the welfare of fellow captives above her own and she even stood up to executioner “Jihadi John” to defend her Christian faith.
Can you even imagine the horrors inflicted on her day in and day out by those evil terrorists? I can’t. In fact those who were held captive with her still can’t believe it.
“One of the Beatles started to say, ‘Oh, this is Kayla, and she has been held all by herself. And she is much stronger than you guys. And she’s much smarter. She converted to Islam.’ And then she was like, ‘No, I didn’t,'” Ottosen told ABC News.
He admits it surprised him a lot. He had once tried to strangle himself when ISIS guards strung his arms up by chains.
“I would not have had the guts to say that. I don’t think so,” he said. “It was very clear that all of us were impressed by the strength that she showed in front of us. That was very clear.”
Kayla was held hostage for 18 months. During that time she was tortured, isolated for weeks, and raped again and again. Yet somehow through it all she stayed strong, even when forced to appear on camera.
Frida Saide and Patricia Chavez were two Doctors Without Borders aid workers held captive with Kayla for a period of time. They and others not identified were instrumental in smuggling letters out to Kayla’s parents when they were freed in March 2014. We learned of one letter just after the news broke of her death.
Unfortunately and infuriatingly the rest of the story isn’t so pretty. First, Doctors Without Borders didn’t inform Saide, Chavez or other aid workers of Kayla’s kidnapping by ISIS. Secondly, that organization kept BOTH letters from Kayla’s family for months! Their excuse was because they didn’t want the letters to interfere with getting other hostages released. Third, Doctors Without Borders claims that Saide and Chavez told them to hold on to the letters. Both women categorically state that is untrue.
But that’s not all. Obama, the Administration, and FBI played a role in her death also. The FBI and Obama BLOCKED the family from paying ransom to free Kayla. In fact, the Muellers were threatened with criminal prosecution if they attempted to pay!
It also became clear that the Administration drug its feet even when given active intel as to Kayla’s location. They dithered for so long that Kayla was murdered before they decided to do anything. To add insult to injury, the President personally pledged, on March 13, 205, a donation to the charity they started in Kayla’s name.
President Obama will make a financial contribution to a memorial foundation for slain ISIS hostage Kayla Mueller, the White House said today, but a spokesperson couldn’t explain why he hasn’t donated in the 17 months since her parents say he made a heartfelt pledge to them.
Supposedly the President still plans to keep his promise, but I wouldn’t bank on it.
Doctors Without Borders has much to answer for. As does Obama. He can pay a $400 million ransom to Iran, the worlds biggest terror sponsor and provide them with an additional $1.7 billion in funds, but drags his feet when it comes to saving Americans from ISIS. The craven indifference of both is inexcusable.
Is Kayla Mueller’s story of her courage and faith in the midst of horrific captivity one we should never forget? Absolutely. May we learn from her example of bravery, selflessness, and perseverance in the face of evil.
