Gavin Newsom’s Primetime Speech Was A Political Failure

Gavin Newsom gave a primetime speech last night. From the very start it was both a comedy and a political failure. Unless you are a member of the fawning media that is. According to them, he was sounding a warning about Trump.

“What’s happening right now is very different than anything we’ve seen before,” Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, said in a speech Tuesday night that was seemingly addressed as much to his own state’s residents as to the nation.

“This isn’t just about protests here in Los Angeles. When Donald Trump sought blanket authority to commandeer the National Guard, he made that order apply to every state in this nation,” Newsom said amid days of unrest in southern Californiaafter the President mobilized troops to quell violence and vandalism that had broken out during demonstrations against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids—an escalation Newsom called a “brazen abuse of power” that “inflamed a combustible situation.”

Except that Newsom has still refused to call in the National Guard to shut things down. Evidently he’s totally fine with protestors trapping law enforcement under overpasses and setting Waymo electric vehicles on fire.

In fact, the vast majority of his primetime speech had nothing to do with the current situation in Los Angeles. That is, once he got the speech going.

Yes, there was a Take Two. And it was just as bad as the failure of Take One – with video this time.

Yet, the media is ignoring the very inconvenient fact that his primetime speech was more of a diatribe against Trump than about shutting down the riots. Instead, he was Presidential!

When Gavin Newsom stepped in front of a camera Tuesday evening, he was a California governor addressing his constituents as a crisis of civil disorder gripped pockets of Los Angeles.

But by the time Mr. Newsom was finished, it was clear the governor was speaking not only to his state but to his country, and his beleaguered party.

To Democrats looking for direction and leadership, Mr. Newsom used one of the highest-profile moments of his political career to lay out the threat that he argued President Trump posed to the nation, and how Americans should resist it. And he suggested he was the man to lead that fight.

This is a guy who was texting various folks in the media and BEGGING them to cover his Very Important Speech.

The memes and the ads will just write themselves at this point.

Make no mistake. Gavin Newsom wants to be President. However, if he REALLY wants the job, bitching and getting tearful about President Trump instead of laying out solutions to the riots, prioritizing illegal aliens over California citizens, and demonizing law enforcement is not the way. Yet that is the path he’s chosen.

No, he wasn’t interested in shutting things down and bringing law and order back to Los Angeles. He’s more interested in yelling at President Trump and turning down offers of aid from other states.

The technical glitches were comical enough. Gavin’s demeanor, almost crying, sounding hoarse and shrill did him no favors either.

Further, his speech made no mention of the fact that the riots are continuing and Karen Bass finally put a curfew in place.

One would think that, if there are riots going on, having the National Guard available would be super helpful. But noooo…Gavin wants to blame Trump for everything that’s happening, claim people are being “disappeared” and throw an asinine reference to January 6 in to boot. Not only that, he invoked the Founding Fathers, and then had his comments transcribed into…Spanish.

This political speech during primetime was supposed to be a career highlight for Gavin Newsom. Instead, it was a political failure.

Make no mistake though, the gaslighting and ignoring the fact that he’s doing NOTHING will continue to the narrative of the Democrats and media. California, under his tenure as Governor has yet to fix a single crisis that state has experienced.

Gavin Newsom may want to be President, but his record of failure speaks for itself.

Why should the nation care that he’s addressing us? He isn’t my governor. That’s the whole point of federalism. (This is a run at the Presidency in 2028. You know it, and I know it.)

When Donald Trump sought blanket authority to commandeer the National Guard, he made that order apply to every state in this nation
He didn’t seek it. He exercised it. This is part of that federalism thing – they are a state “militia”*, but they are also the Armed Forces of the United States of America. If you wanted to not have them federalized, you should have activated them yourself for this situation.

the President mobilized troops to quell violence and vandalism
Nope. He activated them purely to protect federal agents (and property), acting within their federal jurisdiction, enforcing federal law. It’s your job to quell that violence and vandalism and such.

Which brings me to a point: if the state, county, and city governments cannot stop the violence and such, and actually refuse to do so, does that make them no longer “a republican form of government”? One distinction of a “republican form of government” would seem to be proper enforcement of the laws and providing for the safety of the citizens. Can/should Trump invoke Article 4, Section 4?

    Instead, he was Presidential!
Good luck with that, Gov Hairgel!
BTW, since that speech was clearly part of a run for the Presidency, does Trump get equal time to refute? Or do all of the networks that carried the speech (the second time) have to declare it as an in-kind contribution? Because it sure as heck wasn’t something they should have covered on a nation-wide basis because he’s the governor of California.

    he invoked the Founding Fathers
And, if our Founders were gods, a musket ball would have come down from heaven that very instant and struck him down.

has yet to fix a single crisis that state has experienced
Heck, he screwed up things that had gone right. (Like the budget surplus CA had.)

(* Yes, there is an argument whether the Guard units adequately constitute the militia as our Founders intended it. I don’t think it does. Of course, I also think our current arrangement with a permanent ground force violates the Constitution.)
