Dueling Protests in Portlandia: Keeping Things Weird

Hold off on that trip to Voodoo Doughnuts, unless you want to be part of the chaos of dueling protests in Portland today. But if you’re Antifa, perhaps Ted Wheeler would buy you some. From journalist Andy Ngo:

Members of the Proud Boys and Antifa are coming face-to-face today. Citizens are rightly concerned. So, what are Mayor Ted Wheeler and the Portland Police doing to about all of this?

The intent of law enforcement is to provide a safe environment for all participants, non-participants, and community members while ensuring the peaceful exercise of the First Amendment. In order to increase safety for all, officers will be speaking and interacting with individuals from various groups. These interactions and communications are necessary to provide increased safety and should not be construed as bias, preference, or agreement with any particular view point or side. Law enforcement personnel’s role is to protect and serve the public and this is done neutrally and in accordance with the Constitution, Federal, State, and local laws.”-Portland Police Department

Portland Mayor, Ted Wheeler had this to say:

To those people planning to come and inflict violence in our city: We don’t want you here,” he said. “This is why I’ve empowered and directed the Portland Police Bureau to use whatever means necessary and amass whatever resources necessary to uphold the law.”

While we would hope Wheeler would hold Antifa to the same standard, we know this is specifically directed at the alt-right groups alone-most who are traveling to Portland to protest there specifically because of the city’s progressive values. It’s official. He’s taken a stand on Twitter and won’t tolerate any of the following in his city:

Laughable, to say the least, Ted. And I am sure, really effective–that whole “We. Don’t. Want. You. Here.” bit. Funny, some of your residents don’t want YOU there, either. Remember that 39-day Occupy Ice protest? Did the police respond to those calls? And, let’s not forget the biohazard left around the encampment. Let’s just say the Rose City was not smelling like a rose.

There are some groups that have since pulled out of the today’s event because of rumored white supremacist groups making a showing. Should the police use force against white supremacists, wanna-be Nazi crazies who come and inflict violence and give us rational Conservatives a bad name? Absolutely. But they should also use the same force on their hometown boys-their masked Antifa “warriors” who have come out of Mom’s basement after a 72-hour video game binge. Let’s see what happens when they bust out car windows, block traffic for hours on end or hurt innocent bystanders. Wheeler has been as ineffective as they come when it comes to controlling Antifa protestors in the streets or arresting them.

To say that his police force will take action, Wheeler would actually have to let them do their job and not tell them to stand down. Meantime, Antifa propaganda calling on all “Comrades” fills up Twitter:

Come one, come all, Antifa thugs. Bring your lead pipes and your milkshakes to the dueling protests in Portlandia today. Mayor Wheeler will make sure hate speech is not spread in his beautiful city. Business owners? Close your doors because commerce is not happening on your street today unless you’re dealing meth or heroin. Heaven forbid, for once, this city has an ounce of normalcy and rational thought. Stay tuned for updates.

I would have handled this ~totally~ differently.

1 – Require the two groups to assemble in areas away from each other, and away from their planned area of ‘protest’.

2 – Search everyone and confiscate ALL weapons before they enter the protest area. (You should have worn stretchy pants, Biff.)

3 – Ensure the protest area is away from areas with high likelihood of collateral damage.

4 – Cordon off the protest area, allowing in neither spectators nor press.

5 – Erect bleachers outside the cordoned-off area.

6 – Sell tickets and let concession contracts.

If I were a business owner? I would lock and load. And I would get my neighbors to lock and load. And we would politely tell the AntiFa folks to go around.
