Debate Jackassery: Biden the Buffoon

Epic weirdo and Obama campaign manager, Jim Messina, explained Joe Biden’s bizarro laughter at everything un-funny last night as being “a happy warrior for the middle class”. Wrong. Joe Biden was that obnoxiously loud drunk who won’t shut up and you just want to get away from because he’s creepy. Make no mistake. The person we saw last night WAS the real Joe Biden – a not nice, partisan democrat who mastered in Theatrics. And Biden did exactly what he was suppose to do: get even for that first debate and throw red meat to the base.

That was his job.

Joe Biden was a monumental buffoon last night during the debate. His behavior was shameful and embarrassing. But in the Age of Obama, critical matters and issues are always secondary to self aggrandizing and showboating. That’s why he minimized everything with snorts, sneers, smirks, and pompous laughter.

It’s a Democrat thing, really. Paul Ryan was treated last night by Joe Biden the same way President George W. Bush was treated by the Democrats throughout his presidency. Disrespected, minimized, ridiculed. Of all the debate analysis, Peggy Noonan said it best in her column today titled “Confusing Strength with Aggression”. Here’s an excerpt:

“Another way to say it is the old man tried to patronize the kid and the kid stood his ground. The old man pushed, and the kid pushed back. Last week Mr. Obama was weirdly passive. Last night Mr. Biden was weirdly aggressive, if that is the right word for someone who grimaces, laughs derisively, interrupts, hectors, rolls his eyes, browbeats and attempts to bully. He meant to dominate, to seem strong and no-nonsense. Sometimes he did—he had his moments. But he was also disrespectful and full of bluster. “Oh, now you’re Jack Kennedy!” he snapped at one point. It was an echo of Lloyd Bentsen to Dan Quayle, in 1988. But Mr. Quayle, who had compared himself to Kennedy, had invited the insult. Mr. Ryan had not. It came from nowhere. Did Mr. Biden look good? No, he looked mean and second-rate. He meant to undercut Mr. Ryan, but he undercut himself. His grimaces and laughter were reminiscent of Al Gore’s sighs in 2000—theatrical, off-putting and in the end self-indicting. Mr. Ryan was generally earnest, fluid, somewhat wonky, confident. He occasionally teetered on the edge of glibness and sometimes fell off.”

But thankfully, the GOP is pushing back hard. As Ann Althouse notes, the RNC quickly pulled together a pretty cool web ad, which was out before the night was over:

Vice President Joe Biden made a calculated decision to treat Paul Ryan with disrespect. The strategy? Bully, bluster, condescend, mock. It was an over-the-top performance except… Paul Ryan is a stand in for all those Americans of every political stripe who are deeply worried about the state of our country and its future. So it felt like Biden was basically pissing on us all. Shameful. ST Toldjah thinks Biden should apologize. Me too but I won’t hold my breath.
