There are Covid hypocrites like CA Gov. Gavin Newsom, who celebrated a lobbyist’s birthday at the swanky French Laundry restaurant. Then there is Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who cheered Joe Biden’s win in the streets while telling Chicagoans to stay home for Thanksgiving. But the biggest hypocrite of them all is New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who takes hypocrisy to a whole new level.
That’s because de Blasio exhorted New Yorkers not to go down to Times Square to celebrate New Years Eve. Even though the celebrations would be outside, the mayor urged his citizens not to “believe the doubting Thomases” and told them to stay home. It’s for their own good, and the good of the city, you see.

So New Yorkers heeded what Bill de Blasio advised them to do, and Times Square was largely deserted. No boozy crowds, no people with funny masks, no throngs of revelers counting down the ball drop. Hardly anyone attended America’s Biggest New Years Bash.

But hold on — a couple was spotted dancing in the street. And it was none other than the mayor himself, romancing his wife. With masks on, too, to set an example for all you proles out there.
Not only that, but Bill de Blasio uploaded a video of his flat-footed New Years celebration and posted it on Twitter. Is this doofus tone-deaf or what?

Meanwhile, as Bill de Blasio was dancing with his wife, New York City sheriffs broke up three illegal New Years parties. The mayor didn’t attend those festivities, I guess.
A drunken Andy Cohen, who was co-hosting the CNN coverage with Anderson Cooper, had words, and there’s little more scathing than a drunken rant.
Cohen may have been three-sheets-to-the-wind, but his remarks about Bill de Blasio were completely spot-on. Even the more staid law professor Jonathan Turley of George Washington University called out de Blasio’s hypocrisy:
“At 12:01 a.m. on New Year’s, if you listened real hard, you could almost hear the teeth of an entire nation grinding. Well, at least of those watching coverage from New York City as Mayor Bill de Blasio danced with his wife in a virtually empty Times Square. Millions watched as de Blasio dipped his wife in a romantic flourish to the playing of Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York.” At least Nero made his own music.”
New York City is going to hell, and has been under de Blasio’s watch. He cut the police department’s budget by $1 billion, and as a result shootings rose nearly 100% in 2020. He closed public schools even though science — Science! — shows that elementary schools provide little Covid exposure. Now, younger kids can attend school, but must submit to mandatory Covid testing. But those in grades 6-12 are still confined to remote (ahem) “learning.”
Bill de Blasio has annihilated the restaurant industry, destroying the dreams of thousands of small business owners. People are leaving New York City, still de Blasio wants to “tax the hell out of the wealthy.” When the wealthy leave, who will pay NYC taxes? The middle class, of course. The same people who stayed home on New Years Eve.

Bill de Blasio celebrated the new year in Times Square while the little people of New York City stayed home. While crime rages, small businesses collapse, and residents flee.
Public revelry while a city crumbles and its residents suffer is what a tyrant does. It’s horrendous behavior for the mayor of America’s largest city.

Sorry, but those are not remotely a 1:1 causation. The shootings rose more as a result of the police bashing and the criminal release program. Cutting a billion dollars from the police budget is a big deal, but it’s an afterthought compared to other two bits, imo.
is what tyrants do
Meh. It’s what deranged autocrats do. They don’t have to rise to the level of “tyrant” to be that way. /sarc
I hope the residents of NYC see this for what it is: a giant FU to them. BUT after these November elections I’m not sure that the voters have any real say over who governs them. I pray the NYC unions, who probably exert a lot of influence, can get a decent mayor in office.
