Broward County, Florida, is reeling from the attack on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School today, and the loss of at least 17 precious lives at the hand of a demented and evil monster. As so often happens in these horrible moments, the contest for the most hot takes and ghoulish comments was fierce. Here are the “winners” in today’s Ghoul Olympics.
The gold medal for the Insta-Political Sprint goes to Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) for immediately running to the Senate floor less than an hour after the shooting took place – and while the high school was still an active scene, with the shooter not in custody and police evacuating students.
And @ChrisMurphyCT is wasting zero time using these deaths to push his agenda. Class act. https://t.co/4XRBCeea8R

Murphy literally starts his comments with “As we speak.” Again, the shooting was estimated to have started around 2:30 pm ET, and Murphy was on the Senate floor, loudly declaiming the need for gun control with no factual information about anything in hand, at 3:15 pm ET. Forty-five minutes is all Senator Murphy needed to complete the sprint to the floor for a Ghoul Olympics gold.
The gold medal for Blaming the NRA goes to Molly Knight, who decided that tweeting at multiple politicians who took money from the NRA is the best way to shame them into returning money and getting her point across.
Your campaign took $36 million from the NRA. Save your prayers for something else. https://t.co/Mz8FoTbDVd

You’ve taken $3.9 million in blood money from the NRA. Save your prayers for something else @marcorubio. https://t.co/Muk483lnPX

You’ve taken $3.1 million in blood money from the NRA. Save your prayers for something else @senrobportman. https://t.co/B1dwXMMGhP

You’ve taken $4.4 million in blood money from the NRA. Save your thoughts and prayers for something else, @senthomtillis. https://t.co/0K86lYZMKj

Knight gets the gold for her Twitter endurance. A strong performance in the same category earned actress Mia Farrow the silver medal in the Ghoul Olympics.

A solid effort, but you can really tell Knight put more work into her Tweet storm.
And the gold medal for Number Inflation goes to the Everytown crowd, who is claiming that this was the 18th school shooting of 2018.
Our hearts are with all those impacted by the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida today.
This is the 18th school shooting in the U.S. in 2018. https://t.co/YdPLz4zuOS

Today's shooting at a high school in #Parkland, Florida is the 18th school shooting so far this year, according to gun control advocacy organization Everytown For Gun Safety.

Except even HuffPost has acknowledged that Everytown inflates its numbers. They have done this continually by counting suicides, accidental discharges, and shootings on college campuses count as “school shootings.”
There haven’t. There have been 3. That’s 3 too many. It is not 18. Go have a look at Everytown’s list, and you’ll see what they are doing.

Honesty doesn’t help drive Everytown’s political agenda.
Today we mourn for Parkland; tomorrow we fight for them.

But the dishonesty does earn them a Ghoul Olympics gold.
There is going to be a lot of discussion in the following days about the criminal, about the circumstances, about the reaction, about the weapon used and where it came from. But just remember that before any real facts were available, these ghouls were running to score political points while parents were still searching for their children.
They have done this continually by counting suicides, accidental discharges, and shootings on college campuses count as “school shootings.”
Worse than that, Deanna. They’ve also included incidents that were just nearby a school, and included drug deals gone bad that happened in the middle of the night. Is there a word more potent than ‘dishonest’? Because they deserve it.
As to a counter-argument….
Just imagine if that coach that put his body between students and the gunman had been able to return fire?
