Another weekend of the Republican presidential campaign, another weekend on the Trump Fury Road.

Yesterday in Chicago a picture was snapped of a Trump supporter actually giving a Nazi salute. Not merely raising her hand in a pledge, but defiantly flaunting the Seig Heil gesture.

Donald Trump, Jr., was quick to accuse a Bernie Sanders supporter for the offense. . .

. . . but then deleted his tweet when he found that the actual perpetrator was — yes, an actual Trump supporter.

In an interview, Ms. Peterson, who said she was born in West Germany in 1946 and emigrated to the United States in 1982, explained why she made the salute:

“They said Trump is a second Hitler. I said do you know what that sign stands for? Do you know who Hitler really was? I make the point that they are demonstrating something they had no knowledge about. If you want to do it right, you do it right. You don’t know what you are doing.”

I see. She wanted to provide a helpful tutorial on how to correctly perform a Nazi salute. She of course denied actually being a Nazi — “Absolutely I’m not a Nazi, no. I’m not one of those” — and I do tend to believe her.

But while Ms. Peterson is probably not a Nazi, witness this Trump supporter, whose profundity was recorded Saturday by a Dutch journalist. I wonder if this genius is aware that Trump’s son-in-law is Jewish, and that his daughter Ivanka converted to Judaism, but I rather doubt it.

Also on Saturday, Donald Trump had a close call in Dayton, OH, with a man who jumped a railing to get onto the stage with him.

Later in the day, at a Kansas City, MO, rally, Trump claimed the would-be assailant was probably linked to ISIS, because “his people” found a suspicious image on the internet, which Trump was quick to post.

However, the entire video associated with the protester was a troller’s hoax. The man arrested, Thomas Dimassimo, a university student, is an avid supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement and. . . you guessed it, Bernie Sanders. He also delights in desecrating the American flag. The video appears to be the handiwork of a person who started a Facebook page called, “Tommy Dimassimo wasn’t hugged enough as a kid.”

Trump wants vengeance against protesters who disrupted his rallies. In Kansas City he vowed he would “press charges” against them and “ruin their lives.” Video here.

Trump revels in violence and vengeance. Protesters are eager agitators.

A pox on both their houses.

Trump is a bully who uses rallies as a platform to stir up his multitudes to rage and violence, while protesters — eager for a fight — readily push back. We witness Nazi salutes and a Presidential candidate threatened onstage.

As John Podhoretz writes,

Trump, I’ve often said, is a manifestation of Loki, the god of misrule. Misrule breeds chaos. Chaos breeds violence. A political party that chooses Loki for its leader is a political party with a rank-and-file choosing chaos. And a political party whose populist left is provoking its rival into choosing chaos is morally stained as well.

This is not my America. This is not the dignified nation the Founders envisioned.

In his first Inaugural address, Abraham Lincoln pleaded in the days when the Civil War was menacing that “we must not be enemies.” “Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”

The better angels of our nature. If only we as a nation could experience them again.
