Postmaster General Louis DeJoy testified today to the Senate Homeland Security committee about the state of the Postal Service. But it was Senator Tom Carper of Delaware who is getting the media attention.
Now, DeJoy is not nearly on the hot seat as much as Senate Democrats wanted him to be. As much as the wacky conspiracy theories have been pushed about the blue post office boxes being locked or removed, or mail sorting machines being pulled, and legitimate concerts over mail-in voting continue, the left tried to pin all their woes on DeJoy. Everything was going to be his fault. And then DeJoy announced that all USPS reforms would be stopped until after the election, which really took the wind out of their sails, even though they were still talking about it at the DNC. DeJoy’s statement was pretty clear.
The Postal Service is ready today to handle whatever volume of election mail it receives this fall. Even with the challenges of keeping our employees and customers safe and healthy as they operate amid a pandemic, we will deliver the nation’s election mail on time and within our well-established service standards. The American public should know that this is our number one priority between now and election day. The 630,000 dedicated women and men of the Postal Service are committed, ready and proud to meet this sacred duty.”
I am announcing today the expansion of our current leadership taskforce on election mail to enhance our ongoing work and partnership with state and local election officials in jurisdictions throughout the country. Leaders of our postal unions and management associations have committed to joining this taskforce to ensure strong coordination throughout our organization. Because of the unprecedented demands of the 2020 election, this taskforce will help ensure that election officials and voters are well informed and fully supported by the Postal Service.”
I came to the Postal Service to make changes to secure the success of this organization and its long-term sustainability. I believe significant reforms are essential to that objective, and work toward those reforms will commence after the election. In the meantime, there are some longstanding operational initiatives — efforts that predate my arrival at the Postal Service — that have been raised as areas of concern as the nation prepares to hold an election in the midst of a devastating pandemic. To avoid even the appearance of any impact on election mail, I am suspending these initiatives until after the election is concluded.”
Despite the desire to keep going with the conspiracy kooks, elected Democrats have begun to slowly back off and offer their best Emily Litella. Still, they wanted to look good, so the Postmaster General was brought in to testify.
And then Senator Carper stole the show with his f-bombs. The following video contains them, so this is your official NSFW and children warning.
Senator Tom Carper curses at his staff member cuz he can't figure out how to unmute himself. Calm down, sir. pic.twitter.com/p3cvkEp0BU

This is a bad look for Carper, who has admitted to domestic abuse of his first wife during their marriage (they divorced in 1983, after he was elected to office, and then admitted to the abuse in 1988). The sudden display of temper was more than a little bit startling to observers. After all, it was just an issue with the mute button, right? Is there an expiration date for when a history of domestic abuse stops being a problem?

Yes, of course Carper has the magical letter “D” after his name, so “issues” like this can now be waved away, after winning elections by outright lying about it when confronted in 1982. And the magical letter “D” also means Carper can try this excuse:
Those who know me know that there are few things that get me more fired up than protecting the Postal Service!#DontMessWithUSPS

Nice way to cover for the verbal abuse of your staff for your technical ineptitude, Senator Carper.
Nothing DeJoy says today will really make any waves.
He has very calmly addressed several issues that the senators have raised, and really gives the lie to this being some massive complicated conspiracy to “steal the election.” And since all elections are run by the states, shouldn’t the states consider secure ballot drop box locations, as they do in Washington state, as a way to bypass the USPS? It’s so crazy, it just might work!
In the meantime, perhaps Senator Carper should remember that he should treat all online mics as hot, and not to swear at his own staff.

Seeing as how he’d managed to unmute himself, it seems this is most likely an ID-10-T error…
And yeah, gotta love that magical D as a get out of jail free card..
It’s a 1D10T error, pronounced “one dee two tee”. (Because “10” is “2” in binary.)
(And I’m betting right before the camera came on he told that staffer, “Stop hovering! I can do this myself!”)
DeJoy’s statement was pretty clear.
And he perjured himself. It’s baloney that the USPS can handle the volume of mail that a large number of states doing mail-in balloting would create. Heck, they can’t “handle” the volume of mail they get now without bundles of it being discovered in some field somewhere, or a storage unit, or delivered 4 months after the fact. (Did you know that it takes something like 90 days to receive a refund from the USPS when they decide after you mail it IN the post office that a package can’t be delivered? If a company did that, they’d get sued for fraud.) (Did you also know that the people working the phones at various USPS facilities don’t even know what the USPS website says is the policy regarding shipment of packages to certain countries? They swear countries on the prohibited list are NOT on the prohibited list.)
our well-established service standards
BWAHAHAHAHA!
our current leadership taskforce
So, a committee of “management” types and state bureaucrats and politicians. Oh yeah, that’s going to be successful……..
Look, I appreciate the guy trying to make USPS better. And I never appreciate the political class (of either color) running a show trial for bullcarp baloney conspiracy theories. But, c’mon, man! This is the US Postal Service we’re talking about! This is not your grandfather’s USPS, where neither sleet nor snow nor dark of night, blah, blah, blah. This is a unionized half-gov’t monstrosity that sucks taxpayer dollars while delivering… well, not as much as they used to, for certain. (You know they won’t stop to pick up mail at businesses now, unless there is mail to deliver? Too bad if you do not get enough spam to rate getting your rent check picked up before the 1st.)
Defending the USPS is a thankless job – for good reason.
shouldn’t the states consider secure ballot drop box locations
Hell no, you can’t do that! That would require going outside in this time of plague and disaster and actually travelling to where you might encounter another person! You could catch da Covid and DIE!
BTW, there’s a protest rally Saturday at 3rd & Main, to insist we have to all vote by mail because being out in crowds is too dangerous. Join us there!
