On the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which ushered in women’s suffrage, President Trump pardoned Susan B. Anthony. The usual suspects in the media and on the Left (but I repeat myself) howled. But no one can troll like Trump, and he just lured them into giving him attention during the Democratic convention.
In 1872, Susan B. Anthony committed the egregious crime of voting in an election, which was a male-only right at the time. She didn’t go to prison for the offense, but she did receive a $100 fine (with costs!) after a judge ordered the jury to find her guilty. Anthony refused to pay the fine, but wasn’t able to appeal the verdict as she wasn’t imprisoned.
Despite the arrest and conviction, Susan B. Anthony refused to sit down and shut up, instead dedicating her life’s work to gaining the vote for American women. Finally, in 1920, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution passed, giving all women over 21 the right to vote.

So on Tuesday, August 18th, on Day Two of the Democratic National Convention, President Trump pardoned Anthony after dropping teases on Monday night that he would “pardon a very important person.”
The usual suspects in liberal media and politics screeched their outrage.
Take, for example, the New York Times. The Grey Lady, the vaunted Paper of Record, who would criticize Trump for saving drowning puppies from a river, noted the pardon by claiming that Joe Biden is Winning!
“President Trump’s pardon of the famed suffragist Susan B. Anthony comes as women celebrate the 100th anniversary of their right to vote, and Joseph R. Biden Jr. benefits from a yawning gender gap.”
The Times also sniffed that Trump had never spoken of Anthony before now. Plus, Susan B. Anthony is someone those knuckle-dragging pro-lifers have adopted as a champion, making her “an increasingly divisive figure” says the Times. In fact, they pointed out, one of the women present when Trump signed the pardon was Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List. And that is a pro-life group — anathema to the Grey Lady who will suffer no voices who stand up for the unborn.
Former Congresswoman Katie Hill tweeted that Susan B. Anthony didn’t want to be pardoned anyway. So there.
Susan B. Anthony did not want to be pardoned. She was very pointed about this. Not until all women had full equality (which we still don’t have).
She said instead she would “urge all women to… the old revolutionary maxim that ‘Resistance to tyranny is obedience to God.’”

Sounds like sour grapes from the woman who was involved in a sexual threesome between she, her husband, and a female staffer. Nude pictures of her smoking a bong while naked with her staffer emerged, and Hill left office. Ironic that Katie Hill would use “obedience to God” in a tweet.
Racial activist, attorney, and angry black woman Imani Gandy accused Susan B. Anthony of racism.

In fact, she only cared about white women. So of course Trump pardoned her.
Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton focused on white women’s suffrage over voting rights for all women. https://t.co/MYqfCfMpVD #BLM #SusanBAnthonyRacist

Good on President Trump for pardoning Susan B. Anthony and honoring the woman who helped to earn the right to vote for me. And yes, I will exercise that right again this November (it won’t be for Joseph R. Biden, Jr, either. *wink wink).
But there’s also that lovely sense of Schadenfreude which comes from seeing Trump troll the Left yet again. And on the second day of the Democratic National Convention, too. They just can’t help themselves — they take his bait every single time, because no one trolls the Left better than Donald Trump.

Another great article from the Victory Girls! This blog is rapidly becoming one of my favorites. I always make a point to visit here everyday to get a fresh and well written take on our political world. You ladies have helped to restore my faith in humanity. Thank you for all your great work and keep it up!
In fact Susan B. Anthony was a very close friend of Frederick Douglass, the leading black rights activist of the 19th century. She introduced him at the National Council of Women in 1895. Soon after his speech he had a heart attack and died. She spoke at his funeral. And there is a park in Rochester NY with statues of the two of them seated at a table having tea ~25 years earlier. So it is weird to claim that she was against black rights.
That information is even on the linked page for the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House. Just 4 lines into “Her Life” is:
Their farm on what is now Brooks Avenue becomes a meeting-place for anti-slavery activists, including Frederick Douglass.
And 6 lines later is:
Anthony becomes agent for the American Anti-Slavery Society.
Trump’s pardoning of Susan B. Anthony means little. It’s best to ignore meaningless political stunts like this. As usual for The Mean Girls Blog, this article is full of snark and little else.
I’m not sure exactly how this observation fits into the current zeitgeist, but voter demographics demonstrate that the America-hating Democrats would win far fewer national elections if women didn’t vote.
which was a male-only right at the time
To clarify, that was solely on a by-state basis. Nowhere in the Constitution is the franchise limited, except by citizenship. The limitations were in state constitutions and laws. What the 19th Amendment did was nationalize what was already true in many states: women couldn’t be denied the right to vote. It’s arguable whether such an amendment was necessary, and whether it helped the rush to nationalize so many topics not included under the rubric of “federal gov’t”.
a yawning gender gap
Well, said “gender gap” certainly produces yawns from a large chunk of the electorate.
Not until all women had full equality (which we still don’t have).
You’re right. You should be included in the draft to be equal. You shouldn’t be given time off for pregnancy/birth (unless you can manage it during a union-mandated smoke break). You should only receive custody in divorce cases 50% of the time.
You really don’t want what you’re asking. Really, you don’t. (Because you’re saying “equality” but that’s not what you mean.)
Schadenfreude
Yep. “Troll Level: Trump” has now become a thing denoting higher status than “Master”. 🙂
