Wear an Offensive Costume and You Should Be Punished

If you’re a college student who wants to be a bit edgy for Halloween, watch out. Because that “offensive” costume should bring on punishment, according to a majority of college students in a recent poll. Apparently just getting stink-eye from your peers is not harsh enough.

The polling service College Pulse asked 1500 college students the following question:

“Are highly offensive Halloween costumes (such as blackface) a protected form of free speech on campus, or should students who wear them be punished?”

The results showed that 51% of students thought the offensive costume wearer should be punished, while 49% thought costumes are a protected form of speech.

Moreover, when breaking down the results according to political leanings, 72% of college Democrats favored punishment. However, Republican students who favored punishment clocked in at 22%.

So what should this “punishment” look like? We don’t know — College Pulse didn’t ask that question. But woe to the college student who wears the wrong costume.

So what constitutes an “offensive” Halloween costume?

The University of Texas at Austin (of course, it’s Austin) gave its students a handy guide on costume do’s and don’ts.

“Harmful Themes or Costumes”

  • Any time you paint or tint your skin in attempt to appear to be a different skin tone, race, or culture.
  • Generalized representation/stereotypes of Asian cultures.
  • Cowboys and Indians
  • Gypsies or Geishas
  • South of the Border/Fiesta
  • Hawaiian/Tropical
  • Ghetto Fabulous/Urban
  • Pimps and Hoes/Golf Pros & Tennis Hoes/Trophy Wives
  • Chicks and Hicks/Rednecks
  • Around the World
But don’t worry — the university doesn’t want to quash your freedom:
“UT Austin does not place limits of students’ freedom of expression. We do not regulate their speech or enforce costume guidelines as rules.”
Suure, they don’t.

Students at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, also instruct students in the ways of woke costuming.

It just won’t stop, will it? Instead, colleges and universities — which allegedly exist to foster free thought — want to run students through star chambers should they wear what they deem to be an “offensive” Halloween costume. Even if that white student didn’t mean to offend. Or maybe was just being edgy for the holiday.

But, most importantly, it’s freakin’ Halloween for cryin’ out loud. It is not real life. Grow up.

Meanwhile, students and parents are going into deep debt to attend these re-education camps. Maybe they should think about just where their hard-earned money is going.

“Any time you paint or tint your skin. . .”… so does that mean alien costumes, or characters from “Avatar”?? The level of stupidity emanating from so called “institutions of higher learning” is truly amazing… and sad.. and why I’m going to college online…

People need to stop sending their kids to places with this kind of stupid shit, and make sure that the “schools” know why.. and alumni need to start keeping their money… The left truly does destroy everything it touches..

They are removing the FUN from so much of our lives – if we let them. I’m wondering what the punishment would be to play pretend for Halloween. Might be worth it. But I’m not an insecure college student.

Question- if the person wearing a culturally insensitive costume is an American Democrat or a Canadian Liberal from a powerful family, then is it still bad?

I was just watching Puccini’s Madame Butterfly with the lead role sung by Ermonela Jaho who is an Albanian operatic soprano. [She was brilliant in Suor Angelica.] Now what if she wanted to dress for Halloween as an opera singer playing the role of a tragic heroine? That is, her costume would be indicating she was an opera singer which is true and that would not be cultural appropriation as she would be acting her own profession identity. Of course the present moronic woke lot probably want opera characters like Madame Butterfly to be played only by Japanese. Wagnerian heroines would only be played by those of Germanic descent, etc.

A further thought: the various artistic [performance] faculties in ”woke” universities should probably be racially segregated in terms of study and performance so that only those of French descent could study and play works of Bizet and Berlioz, only those of English descent would be allowed to study and perform Shakespeare, etc. A Chinese pianist such as Lang Lang should be banned from performing any of the European works. Better still shut down any and all arts and humanities courses together with social work/welfare and so on in all universities that subscribe to the childish theories of the so-called progressives.

WHOAH! What the heck business does he have playing a piano at all?! That’s cultural appropriation!

Well, no. They should never have been a place to foster “free thought”. They should be places to foster critical thought. Which means a lot of rote facts need to be taught, and a lot of juvenile pre-conceived ideas need to be quashed. Only then can you build up a thought process that will appreciate wisdom and intelligence and further those things.

Also, if they are really concerned about appropriation, how about doing away with Halloween ‘celebrations’ altogether? After all, the day itself is based on superstitions of the poor and ignorant, right? The idea that the spooks and goblins come out for one night of terror before All Saint’s Day is trivialized and diminished by these sorts of goings-on, right?

  • GWB says:

BTW, I think it is a sad commentary on how hedonistic our lifestyle is that All Hallow’s Eve has replaced All Hallow’s (All Saint’s) Day as something worth celebrating with as much effort and money as we currently do. Especially as an adult event.

Well, in college (Manchester, UK) in the 1960’s, a bunch of us tried to get a couple of stuffed pigeons, put them down in the central square among the REAL pigeons, while playing a recording of Tom Lehrer’s “When we’re poisoning the pigeons in the park”. We couldn’t get the pigeons…
