Penn State Drug Bust Charges Frat Boys In Cocaine Trafficking

As colleges and universities start to ramp up for fall semester, it’s snowing early in Pennsylvania and a few Penn State fraternity brothers were doing their best to be kings of the party circuit on the East Coast.

Now, I say this with all intended sarcasm. As we unpack the story here, a few brothers from Sigma Chi and Delta Upsilon fraternities at Penn State are looking at a semester or two (or more) behind bars for trafficking coke.

My guess was getting busted first week into the semester was not on their BINGO card. They got through work week and rush and some may be in need of an income stream to continue to pay for their friends and fuel some stamina to get through late-night throw downs and early morning lecture halls.

Authorities allege the operation focused on off-campus fraternity houses for Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi, where cocaine was brought in large quantities from Philadelphia and New York throughout 2023 and 2024.

The evidence showed that cocaine was primarily packaged at the fraternity houses, and that packaging was done by fraternity brothers and often time pledges.”-Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday

The cocaine was cut and packaged primarily at the off-campus Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi fraternity houses before being distributed mainly to Penn State students. The older “brothers” made their pledges cut and package the stuff. (AKA hazing.) Imagine being a first-year college freshman guy, a bit awkward and geeky, wanting so badly to belong, wanting to not be excluded from these guys who promise to be his ride-or-die brothers, telling you to cut cocaine into baggies or they will not be your friend anymore. No hot girls at parties for you. This was part of the initiation.

The main characters in this play are Agostino Abbatiello, of Sigma Chi and Thomas Robinson, of Delta Upsilon, though there were a total of 14 charged. While these two are no longer part of Penn State, their “brotherhood” gives them access to the off-campus frat houses where they once lived. They had some influence over the years. Robinson’s dad was even in on it, providing a safe for concealing the cash and the drugs. Now, I have heard of protecting your children at all costs but this is a bit over-the-top.

We are horrified by these serious allegations against current and former students. Criminal activity, including hazing, such as this has no place at our institution, and we will cooperate with law enforcement in any way we can. We will continue to enhance our efforts around health and safety and hazing educational efforts for all our organizations.”-Andrea Dowhower, Penn State’s vice president for Student Affairs

The problem is, university officials say this same BS, time and time again. These are “off-campus” houses, so the university has nothing to do with their dealings. If a girl is date-raped, it happened “off campus”. If a minor gets drunk, alcohol poisoning, passes out, falls down the stairs, smashes his skull and bleeds to death, it happens “off campus”. Hell, even the parents are in on protecting their little darlings when they do something to damage others in the student body.

Now, one caveat I want to add here is that I am not one of these “abolish the entire Greek system” types. I actually was in the frat guys’ corner when they protected our flag from harm at UNC Chapel Hill:

They are not all terrible. My son was even recruited by some of his friends in his first year and, if you saw him at first glance, would blend in at any house of his choosing. He’s fit, he’s good-looking, he’s smart and yes, a gentleman. He decided against rush, because of his rigorous academic route, and opted for career-related organization involvement instead. He’s also been known to say that he’s been to enough parties to know the culture is “toxic”. Yikes.

But the dark undertow of drug trafficking through the Greek System is not just at Penn State. This happens all across the U.S. on college campuses everywhere. The “ride or die” brotherhood and sisterhood of years past in the Greek System has turned into petty comparison between the kids and the parents, drug use and other addictive disorders and a culture of exclusivity. Basically, peaking in college. They say it’s about “networking” and “academics” and “philanthropy”. And, apparently, now, drug trafficking.

Admittedly, I snicker when I hear the words, “Gentlemen” and “Husband Material” come out of the mouths of sorority girl babes and their moms these days who hire rush counselors. Little do they know their date dash partner was dashing through the snow before Wine Wednesday. Fall formal, you say? It’s really no big deal who you bring so long as it’s from the “husband house”. Really. Don’t BLOW things up out of proportion on Instagram, sweetheart. Speaking of sweethearts, I wonder who was the Sigma Chi and Delta Upsilon “Sweetheart” at the time of the ring? I’m sure these two girls have some stories.

Sounds like some Penn State students have traded up for State Pen. Grab your shower shoes, glow sticks, togas and turn up the EDM, boys. It’s gonna be lit.
