While President Obama does a mom-jean style victory cheer about the craptastic Iran deal, and the Governors of Indiana and Arkansas cave in to political pressure; ISIS continues its insidious work in Syria and Iraq. However, there is a bright spot regarding their reign of terror. It seems that some of ISIS’s recruitment efforts are falling short. Emily Caswell of Fox News reports on one such story.
Turkish officials announced Thursday that they nabbed 10 Westerners and four Russians allegedly trying to cross into Syria to join ISIS in what may be an effort to stem international criticism that Ankara has been too lax in stopping the tide of foreign fighters using the Arab nation as a conduit on their way to join jihadists.
Three men, two women and four children from the UK and one French national were detained Wednesday by soldiers at a military outpost after being caught in the Hatay region of southern Turkey, Turkish armed forces said in a statement on its website. Separately, on Thursday, officials in the southeastern city of Gazientep announced four Russians had been detained on Thursday, just two days after they deported a Belgian national caught trying to cross into Syria.
The arrests seem to be evidence that, after years of international criticism for lax border controls, Turkey is taking a greater responsibility in monitoring human traffic over its 500-mile border with Syria.
This news comes on the same day that U.N. Security Council experts reported to the U.N. that more than 25,000 foreign fighters from 100 countries are linked to Al Qaeda and Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, comprising a “veritable international finishing school for extremists.”
14 fewer terrorists to deal with are indeed something to cheer about. But wait! There’s more. You see, there are two others who won’t be joining ISIS any time soon. On Thursday members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force arrested 28-year-old Noelle Velentzas and 31-year-old Asia Siddiqui.
Anyone want to take a wild guess as to WHERE they were arrested? If you guessed Syria or Iraq, you are 0 for 2. How about Queens, New York? Yes, you read that correctly, these two terrorists, American citizens no less, were arrested IN our country. ABC’s Mike Levine and Aaron Katersky have more:
In August 2014, 28-year-old Noelle Velentzas became Facebook friends with Tairod Pugh, a U.S. Air Force veteran indicted two weeks ago for his own ISIS-inspired plans. Meanwhile, 31-year-old Asia Siddiqui “has had repeated contact with members of” Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the Yemen-based terrorist group behind several bomb plots targeting U.S.-bound planes.
Both were arrested earlier today without incident in Queens, N.Y., where they had been roommates until recently.
In meetings with an undercover FBI agent in recent months, Velentzas and Siddiqui allegedly discussed efforts to learn the “science” involved in building explosives, often analyzing previous bomb plots inside the U.S. — failed ones and successful ones, like the Oklahoma City bombing. In addition, they downloaded “The Anarchist Cookbook” and watched videos about building bombs, court documents allege.
Also in meetings with the undercover FBI agent, Velentzas expressed anger over U.S. airstrikes targeting ISIS in Syria and Iraq, and she suggested she and Siddiqui be referred to as “citizens of the Islamic State,” according to charging documents. She also allegedly watched ISIS propaganda videos with the undercover agent.
According to some reports, they had a desire to please Allah. One wonders what they meant by that? Could it mean joining a mosque, following the dress code, and adhering to the food requirements. Yeah, that’s the ticket. Nothing to see here, move along… RIGHT?? Not. So. Fast.
You see, Asia had four propane tanks in her possession, and Velentzas was starting to collect pressure cookers. No, they weren’t planning a neighborhood bbq for 300 of their closest friends. Instead Asia was studying the instructions to figure out how to transform those propane tanks into explosive devices. Jonathan Dienst, Joe Valiquette, Kevin Nious and Jennifer Millman of NBC New York provide additional details on this “lovely” lady:
Siddiqui has repeatedly contacted members of al-Qaida overseas to offer her support, the complaint alleges. She also sent a letter of support to Mohammed Mohamud, the man arrested in November 2010 after trying to blow up a Christmas-tree lighting ceremony in Portland, Oregon; the return address was linked to York College in Jamaica.
In 2006, Siddiqui allegedly became close with Samir Khan, who later moved to Yemen, became the editor of the propagandist magazine Inspire and moved up the ranks of the terror group on the Arabian Peninsula. In 2009, Siddiqui wrote a poem published in Jihad Recollections, Inspire’s predecessor, that called for readers to engage in violent jihad and destroy enemies of Islam, court papers allege.
According to the complaint, she wrote that she “drop[s] bombs” as she swings on a hammock, “taste[s] the Truth through fists and slit throats” and that there is “[n]o excuse to sit back and wait — for the skies to rain martyrdom.”
These two women have been engaged in gathering knowledge, and developing a plot to build and detonate bombs somewhere in New York City for months and even years. And they aren’t the only ones. In the last 18 months alone at least 30 others, many of whom are US citizens, have been arrested and are being prosecuted for desiring to travel abroad to join terrorist groups like ISIS. However, these two women were just a little bit different. They wanted to be famous and BAD; and they wanted to “make history” here at home on U.S. soil.
Well, those two are indeed famously “bad,” and are making history. However, its not quite the “history” they’d planned for. Thanks to the hard work of the men and women of the Joint Terrorism Task Force; Noelle and Asia’s planned ISIS-inspired ‘violent jihad’ against NYC and the U.S. is over before it has even begun. Now THAT is something to cheer about.
