If only Nixon could go to China, maybe Trump is the only one who could go to Mexico.
Donald Trump and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto met today in Mexico, after Nieto extended the invitation to have a private meeting. The two men emerged from the meeting with cordial words about each other, and then Trump promptly laid down a succinct five point message that was solid and stunning in its simplicity.
“Number one: ending illegal immigration. Not just between our two countries, but including the illegal immigration and migration from the central and south Americas.”
“This is a humanitarian disaster, the dangerous treks, the abuse by gangs and cartels, and the extreme physical dangers. And it must be solved – it must be solved quickly. Not fair.”
“Number two: having a secure border is a sovereign right and mutually beneficial. We recognize the right of either country to build a physical barrier or wall on any of its borders to stop the illegal movement of people, weapons and drugs,” Trump said. The move is “paramount to both the United States and to Mexico.”
“Number three: Dismantling drug cartels,” Trump said. “This can only be done with cooperation, and intelligence and intelligence sharing.
“Improving Nafta, number four. Nafta is a 22-year-old agreement that must be update to reflect the realities of today,” Trump said, which would make both countries “stronger and keep industry in our hemisphere. We have tremendous competition from China and from all over the world. Keep it in our hemisphere.”
“Number five: Keep manufacturing wealth in our hemisphere. When jobs leave Mexico, the US or Central America and go overseas, it increases poverty.”
“The bond between our two countries is deep and sincere, and both our nations benefit from a close and honest relationship between our two governments.”
“I call you a friend. Thank you.”
While the beginning of his remarks were more classically Trump (“I love Mexico, I have a lot of Mexican American friends, they are hard workers,” etc.), the five points that he laid out are shockingly simple and almost perfectly delivered. While I am not a Trump fan, I don’t know how this private meeting and subsequent press conference can be called anything but a home run for the Trump campaign. It has the potential to swing the momentum of the race in his direction, IF he continues to stick to these five points. And considering the continued email revelations from the FBI, today just became a no-good, very bad, awful day for Hillary Clinton and her campaign.
