Its a well known fact that the cyber security of our government agencies is less than stellar. Heck, the cyber security of banks and major retail chains isn’t any better! In the last three years we’ve been told that government data and information on government employees has been hacked multiple times. The White House even got hacked, but nothing to see there, move along. But wait Obama has solved the biggest mystery ever! THE RUSSIANS HACKED THE ELECTION!!

Sort of… it was the DNC not the actual election. Don’t get me wrong having an enemy of the U.S. hack into our systems is a serious problem. However, Obama has decided to finally to do something via his handy dandy Executive Order pen.

The Obama administration announced sanctions Thursday against Russia’s intelligence services, while ejecting dozens of intelligence operatives from the U.S., as part of a response to what it says are efforts by Moscow to influence the 2016 election.

Those sanctions include shutting down two Russian compounds, giving 35 diplomats exactly 72 hours to leave the US, sanctioning 6 Russian individuals and 5 entities. All because of their involvement in what Obama calls “Significant Malicious Cyber-Enabled Activities.”

Is the cyber security or lack thereof of our government systems a very serious issue that has led to major hacks? It definitely is. And we are right to be very concerned and angry that another country, one not our ally, was able to gain access into our systems. However, we also have to ask ourselves…does this warrant the level of sanctions that Obama just imposed? Lets take a look at the report...found here.

The report, published by the FBI and DHS, is thirteen pages long. You’re thinking…kind of short right? It is. Here’s the deal, of the 13 pages, exactly TWO deal with the hack. TWO.

The FSB (formerly the KGB) and the GRU’s ATP28 gained access to the DNC once in 2015 and in the spring of 2016.

Both organizations gained access to the DNC through targeted spearphishing campaigns, in which the hackers tricked targeted users into clicking bogus links that either deployed malware or directed them to a fake webmail domain hosted on Russian infrastructure.

John Podesta himself was responsible for opening one of those fake emails, and we know what happened after that don’t we? Meanwhile, the Russians aren’t pleased. 

“We think that such steps by a U.S. administration that has three weeks left to work are aimed at two things: to further harm Russian-American ties, which are at a low point as it is, as well as, obviously, to deal a blow to the foreign policy plans of the incoming administration of the president-elect,” Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow.

OUCH. As soon as I heard the news my first thought was…there he goes.

Don’t get me wrong, Russia is continuing a pattern that was put in place decades ago. Paul Ryan is correct that Russia has continually sought to undermine us, but Obama has allowed and encouraged America’s weakness as well!

Has Obama gone to far with his latest swipe of the pen? Time will tell.

Basically this is what it boils down to. If you think the Russian hack caused Trump to get elected, then you also need to believe that a Youtube video really did cause Benghazi. As for Obama? This latest action does nothing to shore up his legacy and it further weakens America’s standing across the world.
