The official government bureau created by Kathy Hochul and Letitia James is called the Office of Immigrant Trust (OIT). It was formed back in May of this year. Its purpose is charged with enforcing New York’s restrictions on local cooperation with ICE.

NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James and Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that the new Office of Immigrant Trust (OIT), a first-of-its-kind statewide bureau within the Office of the Attorney General (OAG), sent letters to the 12 local law enforcement agencies in New York that currently have 287(g) agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), informing them that state law requires they unwind the agreements by August 25, 2026. Created as part of a legislative package championed and signed by Governor Hochul on May 27, 2026, OIT is dedicated to enforcing New York laws that protect immigrant communities, strengthen public trust, and limit the use of state and local resources for federal civil immigration enforcement. From Sanctuary State To Sanctuary Bureaucracy

When I heard about this and read the articles that this was happening, my jaw hit the floor. It’s one thing for a state to disagree with federal immigration policy. States sue the federal government all the time. They argue over funding, regulations, education, health care, and just about everything else under the sun.

But it’s something else entirely when a state creates an official government bureau that is taking actions to discourage and punish cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. And they are targeting the sheriffs in New York.

I don’t know about you, but this comes real close to betraying our country, attempting to create hostilities, and helping enemies.

The federal government is responsible for enforcing our nation’s immigration laws. We have borders; we are a sovereign nation.

But now, New York will investigate complaints, issue subpoenas, review records, and bring civil enforcement actions against state and local agencies if they cooperate with the federal government. You know, for doing their jobs.

Fortunately, Not Every Sheriff Is Backing Down

Thankfully, not everyone has decided to simply fall in line. Some sheriffs have made it clear they’re not about to turn their backs on federal law enforcement just because Albany says so. Others are openly questioning whether the state has gone too far.

The Justice Department has already challenged the underlying New York law in federal court, arguing that the state’s restrictions on cooperation with federal immigration enforcement are unconstitutional. If the DOJ prevails, it could undercut the legal foundation for the Office of Immigrant Trust’s enforcement efforts.

This Isn’t Simply About New York

The creation of a permanent government bureaucracy whose job is to discourage cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. That’s a significant shift, and one that should concern every American, regardless of where they live.

Because if New York can create an official bureau to investigate and pressure sheriffs for working with ICE, what stops another state from doing the same? What other areas of federal law might states decide to obstruct next?

There was a time when cooperation between law enforcement agencies was considered common sense. New York has turned it into something that requires government investigation. That’s a remarkable and troubling place for the country to be.
