There’s now a Clinton and a Bush in the race for the 2016 election. Let’s do the time warp again!!!!
Today, Jeb Bush will finally declare that he is a candidate, after months of dancing around – to the point where his talking tours around the country were being called a “shadow campaign.” But that all changes as of right now.
Monday at Miami Dade College’s Kendall campus, Bush will portray himself as a doer, a politician who put conservative ideas into action in a diverse state and who seeks public office to govern rather than pontificate. He will then take his pitch on the road, visiting New Hampshire, Iowa and South Carolina between Tuesday and Thursday.
“This is what leadership is about — it’s not just about yapping about things,” he said in a campaign video unveiled Sunday. “There are a lot of people talking, and they’re pretty good at it. We need to start fixing things. I said I was going to do these things and I did them, and the result was Florida is a lot better off.”
Jeb Bush, who was once thought to be the Republican front-runner, is now going to face a pretty steep battle because what might have been assets in the past could now be demerits.
First, name. I respect the Bush family enormously. But we do not have “ruling” families in this country. The same arguments that can be made about Hillary Clinton running on the strength of her name can also be made about Jeb Bush. Granted, Jeb has a much stronger record of achievement than Hillary. He still isn’t going to be able to escape the comparisons to his father and his brother.
Second, state. With Marco Rubio also in the race, Florida is already represented by a candidate. Jeb will have to do a lot more scrambling for votes on his own home turf, where he was elected as governor twice.
Third, the Hispanic “edge” that was once his no longer exists. Jeb’s wife, Columba, is a Mexican national by birth and became a naturalized citizen in 1979. However, Rubio and Ted Cruz have an even stronger corner on any advantage with Hispanic voters. While his Hispanic connection will still be seen as an asset, it probably won’t help him the way it once did.
How Jeb manages to conduct himself as an “official” candidate in the next few days will set the tone for the rest of his run for the nomination. Can he beat out the rest of the field (which keeps on growing by the week)? Only time will tell.
If the choice comes down to A Clinton versus A Bush, let’s hope we don’t make the same mistake a second time.
Also, if the Hill is really her own woman, why isn’t she running as Rodham?
Blech. The Bush dynasty would be better than the Clinton one-but not by much. We need NEW blood-specifically, conservative blood.
