El Paso Is Not The New Ellis Island

When Kamala Harris visited El Paso, Texas yesterday, Congressweenie Veronica Escobar claimed that the city she represents is the new Ellis Island. Ellis Island was the legal point of entry for immigrants to the United States for 62 years. Escobar is wrong on so many levels.

Escobar hosted Kamala Harris’s visit to the border town, 800 miles away from the worst part of the Texas border, Of course, the visit by Harris was all political theater because Donald Trump lives rent free in her head.

I wrote briefly about the El Paso/Ellis Island comment yesterday, but I thought it deserved more. For what it’s worth, Escobar, an El Paso native, replaced Beto O’Rourke in the U.S. Congress. Here is the giddy Congresswoman making the Ellis Island remark:

Although Miss Escobar is a former Judge, she appears to have no ethics. During the Trump Administration, she sends aides to coach illegal immigrants on how to get across the border. Hans Von Spakovsky wrote about the law breaking for the Heritage Foundation in July of 2019:

The National Border Patrol Council’s El Paso chapter and Customs and Border Protection staff told the Examiner that Escobar has been sending members of her staff to the Mexican border town of Ciudad Juarez “to find migrants returned from El Paso, Texas, under the ‘remain in Mexico’ policy.”

According to the Examiner, members of Escobar’s staff are then “coaching them to pretend they cannot speak Spanish to exploit a loophole letting them … return to the U.S.”

She flouts U.S. law and makes life more difficult for the front line workers charged with keeping the border safe. She disregards the travails of fellow Democrat Congressman Henry Cuellar. His district gets three times the illegal immigrants that El Paso does. She enriches the cartels and coyotes. From the Texas Tribune in 2019:

Carlos left Honduras with 6-year-old Heyli and a dream of lifting his family out of poverty, only to be caught in the web of a billion-dollar smuggling industry, then separated from his daughter for months. “Right now, the money’s in the people,” one smuggler says.

And, it’s only gotten exponentially worse. Escobar is aiding and abetting the cartels in the transportation of illegal drugs that kill Americans. From ABC News in May:

Customs and Border Protection seized more fentanyl so far in 2021 than all of 2020.

As of April, 6,494 pounds of fentanyl were seized by authorities at the border, compared to 4,776 pounds in all of 2020. In fact, fentanyl seizures have been increasing since 2018.

Not just fetanyl, but methamphetamines, too.

In El Paso, children held in the migrant facility on Fort Bliss are emotionally traumatized:

The level of distress among migrant boys and girls held by the U.S. government at a tent city in the Texas desert has become so alarming that they are constantly monitored for incidents of self-harm, panic attacks and escape attempts, people who worked at the federal site told CBS News.

Some children held at the large tent complex at the Fort Bliss U.S. Army base have required one-on-one supervision 24 hours a day to ensure they don’t hurt themselves. Others have refused to eat or spend most of their days sleeping on cots. Workers said they saw migrant girls and boys with cut marks on their wrists and arms.

Federal officials became so concerned about migrant teens harming themselves that they banned pencils, pens, scissors, nail clippers and regular toothbrushes inside tents housing hundreds of children, according to an internal document. Workers at the site said they were even instructed to remove the metal nose clips from N95 face masks.

The human toll of open borders means nothing to Miss Escobar. She probably agrees with the pro-Stalin New York Times reporter Walter Duranty, who said of all the deaths in the Soviet Union:

“You can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs.”

El Paso is not Ellis Island:

If only there were history books to help Miss Escobar out, before more people die.

Escobar needs to be voted OUT.

  • Andrew says:

Veronica Escobar is a sellout and shameful politician. She needs to be be voted out of office before she does more damage to our city per her misguided policies. What an embarrassment she is to El Paso.

  • Ann in L.A. says:

Giddy is right. She was embarrassing with her infantile simpering.

Part of my family (who also needed to prove they had sponsors and would not be a burden) was nearly sent back because my great aunt, who was a teenager at the time, was sick when they got off the boat. Fortunately, it was some sort of simple flu, she recovered, and they were let in.
