Senator Patrick Leahy gavelled Day Five of Impeachment 2.0 into session and fire started immediately. For those of us that hoped for a quick and merciful end to this cluster(expletive deleted), our hopes were dashed most cruelly.
Trump was impeached on one very specific count. That is, he incited the crowd to insurrection on January 6,2021. He was not charged with dereliction of duty or any other made up thing. Which is why Days One-Three of the House Managers’ case were such an Impeachment palooza game, as Nina put it. The House Managers put up slickly edited videos and doctored tweets.
It was assumed by everyone in the galaxy that Day Five would feature a No vote for witnesses and then a vote along party lines not to convict. A two-thirds majority would be required to convict. Even Senate Minority Leader Mitch “The Turtle” McConnell had indicated he would not vote to convict.
Very first thing, House Manager Jamie Raskin (D-MD) stands up and says that he wants to call Jaime Herrera-Beutler (R-WA) as a witness. Why, you ask? Five weeks, after the January 6 Capitol Breach, Herrera-Beutler has come forward with information regarding a phone call on that day between then-President Trump and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). Per the New York Times:
In a statement on Friday night, Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler, Republican of Washington, recounted a phone call relayed to her by Mr. McCarthy of California, the minority leader, in which Mr. Trump was said to have sided with the rioters, telling the top House Republican that members of the mob who had stormed the Capitol were “more upset about the election than you are.”
The Democrat House Managers have less than zero interest in proving that Trump incited the crowd to insurrection on January 6. We know that because they edited out his peaceful and patriotic words at the rally and the riot was planned for weeks in advance.
Therefore, these drooling morons have focused on emotionally manipulative, Hollywood style videos. And, now they have gone completely out of the scope one article of Impeachment. And, Jaime Herrera-Beutler lit the flame on Day Five.
Herrera-Beutler was one of the nine Republican Congressweenie to vote for Impeachment. We already know her stand on Trump. When did Kevin McCarthy tell Herrera-Beutler about the conversation with Donald Trump. If Herrera-Beutler knew about the conversation before Friday, why did she wait until this date to tell the world? Why would House Manager want to call a hearsay witness (Herrera-Beutler) over a fact witness (McCarthy)?
To say the President’s lawyers were surprised by the move. Well you know the old saw about understatements. So, the President’s lawyer, I think it was Michael Van der Veen said that if witnesses were to be called, there would be depositions at his office in Phil-E-Delphia. That’s how he said it.
Local Dirt here. No one says Phillydelphia. https://t.co/UN7PkmG1Vr

He said it that way to draw it out and make a point. The Twitterziens and Senators had their senses of humor removed through their sphincters.
The Senators then voted 54-46 to call witnesses, until Senator Lindsey Graham stood up and changed his vote to Yes to call witnesses. Now, Lindsey is a wily old coyote and I wouldn’t put it past him to do this to screw the Dems over.
The Twitterziens then got a wedgie over Ted Cruz and Rand Paul talking with the President’s lawyers:
Sen. Rand Paul and Sen. Ted Cruz are both seen talking to Trump's defense team on the Senate floor after multiple Republicans vote yes on witnesses.

Nothing unethical about that kiddies. And, Ted Cruz wants to call Nancy Pelosi so that she can testify about turning down an offer from President Trump for additional troops:
Hale yeah, Babee! Let’s call them all. Call Nancy Pelosi, the fired Chief of the Capitol Hill Police, and guy in the horned helmet, and whoever in the black gloves shot Ashli Babbitt.
Day Five will not be the blessed end. We may get to Day 200. The Democrats didn’t think about Americans before they started this. The children who are depressed and Zoomed-out. The parents who are struggling to pay bills. The elderly trapped in their assisted living homes. The business owners going down for the third time.
Okay, let’s play then. Be careful what you wish for Dems. Brokeback Democrats just don’t know how to quit Trump.
****Update****
After a one hour break, cooler heads prevailed. Closing arguments have begun. Instead of calling witnesses, Jaime Herrera-Beutler’s hearsay evidence was admitted into the record.
Stay tuned. There could be more fire later.

It’s a shame that this isn’t shutting the government down completely. That would be the only good thing coming out of it.
It appears that the Dims have backed down. Too bad. I’d have loved to see the Republican senators questioning San Fran Nan, Mad Max, Dick “dick” Durbin, et.al. A lot of popcorn has been saved.
You are lying. This was not new information, it just wasn’t widely known outside of local reporting. I grew up in Rep. Herrera-Buetler’s district. She told my hometown newspaper about the phone call on January 17th and she also had a town hall where she mentioned this. It only hit national news because she spoke out on Twitter. It’s not her fault that national news didn’t pay attention to reporting for the Southwest corner of Washington state.
Link to the town hall she mentioned in her Twitter statement: http://www.chronline.com/news/as-impeachable-as-it-gets-herrera-beutler-seizes-opportunity-to-defend-impeachment-vote-at-town/article_9a512d0e-6b08-11eb-b5ca-83d6beb29bd8.html
