Coffee with Terrorists: New Disturbing Details about Benghazi

New questions were raised this past week about the progress (or lack there of) of the investigation of the attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission to Benghazi. Eight Republican lawmakers, in an effort led by Senator Lindsey Graham and Representative Jason Chaffetz, are demanding that incoming FBI Director James Comey brief Congress about the investigation according to a draft of their letter that was obtained by CNN this week. They say the administration’s inquiry into the September 11, 2011, attacks in Libya has been “simply unacceptable”.

That is an understatement! The Obama administration’s reaction to the Benghazi attack has been considered more than unacceptable by many Americans. Not only has the GOP accused the Obama administration for botching the response to the attack, the administration has also been questioned about having a role in a cover-up, sticking to UN Ambassador Susan Rice’s explanation, which was later proved untrue, that the attack was the result of a spontaneous demonstration over an anti-Muslim film. The administration still attributes any confusion to “the fog of war”—but that pathetic excuse is subject for another conversation.

The questions that were raised Thursday and that will be elaborated on in the coming weeks are over the fact that none of the suspected terrorists or persons of interest have been captured by the FBI. But, you know, it’s pretty hard to capture a terrorist, right? You can’t just sit down with them for a cup of coffee.

Or can you?

News this week from CNN knocked the Obama administration off its last leg. CNN was able to interview one of the suspected ringleaders of the attack. CNN reporter Arwa Damon sat down with Ahmed Abu Khattala, who Libyan and U.S. officials have described as the Benghazi leader of the al Qaeda-affiliated militia group Ansar al-Sharia – one of many groups that filled the vacuum of authority following the overthrow of Moammar Gadhafi. He has been officially identified by the investigation as a person of interest.

In his interview Khattala told Damon that he had not been contacted by any American or Libiyan officals.

“One of the pertinent questions today is why we have not captured or killed the terrorist who committed these attacks?” Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, told reporters yesterday. “News out today that CNN was able to go in and talk to one of the suspected terrorists, how come the military hasn’t been able to get after them and capture or kill the people? How come the FBI isn’t doing this and yet CNN is?

And the story continues to unfold. Even more questions have been raised in the last couple days about the number of Americans that were actually there during the attack. Some sources are coming forward saying there were as many as 35, due to the high volume of CIA operatives on the ground in Libya. However, the information surrounding what actually happens continues to evade the media and Congress because of an intense effort to silence the CIA operatives that were present. Friday morning CNN reported on the measures being taken by the CIA:

Since January, some CIA operatives involved in the agency’s missions in Libya, have been subjected to frequent, even monthly polygraph examinations, according to a source with deep inside knowledge of the agency’s workings.
The goal of the questioning, according to sources, is to find out if anyone is talking to the media or Congress.
It is being described as pure intimidation, with the threat that any unauthorized CIA employee who leaks information could face the end of his or her career.

The Obama administration seems to be facing an overwhelming amount of evidences that suggests a misrepresentation of the Benghazi attacks to the American public. They backed a thinly disguised phony explanation of the attack until it was proven untrue, managed to run a surprising ineffective investigation and now, new questions are surfacing about the role of CIA operatives.

Representative Frank Wolf, whose district includes CIA headquarters, has joined the eight republicans behind Chaffetz and Graham in demanding an explanation:

“I think it is a form of a cover-up, and I think it’s an attempt to push it under the rug, and I think the American people are feeling the same way,” said the Republican.
“We should have the people who were on the scene come in, testify under oath, do it publicly, and lay it out. And there really isn’t any national security issue involved with regards to that,” he said.

As details continue to surface about Benghazi and the government’s inability to bring the suspects to justice, all Americans should take note of the administrations role and just how concerning it may be.
