Actress Jennifer Lawrence knows why the deadly duo of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma hit the United States. It’s because the U.S. elected Trump. And of course that really angered Mother Nature. Or Gaia. Take your pick.
In an interview with Channel 4 News in Britain, Lawrence mostly talks about her newest movie, “Mother,” and then begins waxing political:
However, Jennifer has not yet commented on the earthquake in Mexico. Is Mother Nature angry at Mexicans, too?
On the other hand, actor and outspoken evangelical Kirk Cameron says it’s God who is sending the hurricanes to cause “humility and repentance.”
On his Facebook page, Cameron wrote:
“When he puts his power on display it’s never without reason. There’s a purpose. And we may not always understand what that purpose is, but we know it’s not random and we know that weather is sent to cause us to respond to God in humility, awe and repentance.”
Finally, there’s Rush Limbaugh, who either did or didn’t say that Hurricane Irma was “fake news.” Either way, Limbaugh is leaving Florida.
I can hear it now.
“So what?”
“Who cares what celebrities say?”
“Who’s Jennifer Lawrence?”
“Why are you giving them publicity?”
Yeah, but it is important to know these things. Why? Because whether or not celebrity culture influences you, it influences others. As the late Andrew Breitbart famously said, “Politics is downstream from culture.” And that river is looking pretty darn polluted right now.
Plus, when celebrities on either side of the vast American political divide blame The Other for somehow incurring natural disasters, large numbers of their followers identify with their sentiments. They don’t see fellow citizens as being worthy of help or aid. In that mindset, victims deserve what they get.
Last week in my church, the pastor offered prayers for the victims of Hurricane Harvey. He didn’t talk about climate change, the mind of God, or fake news. After the service we had a door offering, too, the monies to be directed to our national church body’s disaster response efforts. And we’ll no doubt have another drive for funds in the wake of Hurricane Irma. As the Apostle John wrote, “For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.” That means not playing blame games, or heeding those who do, but caring for victims of disaster, no matter who they are.
Kim is a pint-sized patriot who packs some big contradictions. She is a Baby Boomer who never became a hippie, an active Republican who first registered as a Democrat (okay, it was to help a sorority sister's father in his run for sheriff), and a devout Lutheran who practices yoga. Growing up in small-town Indiana, now living in the Kansas City metro, Kim is a conservative Midwestern gal whose heart is also in the Seattle area, where her eldest daughter, son-in-law, and grandson live. Kim is a working speech pathologist who left school system employment behind to subcontract to an agency, and has never looked back. She describes her conservatism as falling in the mold of Russell Kirk's Ten Conservative Principles. Don't know what they are? Google them!
Cameron’s statement is spot on. Folks like Lawrence don’t grasp humility, at all.
And, if there’s something America could use in spades right now, it’s humility. At least a goodly portion of the non-‘deplorables’ certainly could.
Oh, and here’s a good example of the “love trumps hate” folks’ response to Harvey (and probably Irma, too). (Yes, it’s snark. I have no idea how much actual help has proceeded from those groups of people.)
And on a lighter note Harvey and Irma Schluter cannot understand why the hurricanes are named after them.

Using JLaw’s logic, California is beset by drought, mudslides, earthquakes, fires and other assorted maladies because they voted overwhelmingly for Hillary Clinton….
