In a dramatic turnaround, GOPers have apparently gone from being anti-diversity Muslim-haters to secret Muslim fanatics. As you may know, the RNC’s 2012 convention is being held in Tampa, Florida. And, according to the hysterical lefties at Talking Points Memo, showcasing a historical building on the Tampa skyline is actually a secret ploy by GOPers to feature a minaret in their convention logo, because they’re going to do something with Muslims… or something.
You can see the evidence of the GOP-Muslim conspiracy in the photo of the convention logo, which TPM has helpfully added an arrow to so that you can find the “hidden” minaret. But what does it all mean??
The RNC’s 2012 convention logo features the Tampa Bay skyline and one of the buildings apparently represented in the logo is what was formerly the Old Tampa Bay Hotel, a prominent feature of the Florida city’s skyline. What’s interesting is that the Old Tampa Bay Hotel is a product of the so-called “Moorish Revival” architectural style. And the building is graced by six minarets, the small towers built around a mosque to call worshipers to prayer. The minarets even include the spires with half crescents, a well-known symbol of Islam.
So is it one of the building’s six minarets in the RNC logo? Or is it one of the building’s four cupolas? It looks to us like the minaret. But look at the picture and judge for yourself.
It’s “apparently” representing the old Tampa Bay Hotel, now owned by the University of Tampa. But it’s only “apparently” representing that. It could be a secret GOP conspiracy! Maybe all of the anti-Muslim racist GOP hatemongers will lose their minds!!
This is such a pressing emergency that TPM even contacted the RNC requesting a comment. (The RNC did not immediately respond.) I guess phony conspiracy theories aren’t all that pressing out in the real world. And unfortunately, reality doesn’t quite sit well with lefties as usual. Considering the Tampa city skyline actually does have the building in question in it, there isn’t really a hidden Islamic conspiracy here.
The RNC did, also, eventually comment on the fake conspiracy. It turns out… that the logo wasn’t even drawn up by the RNC! It was created by the Tampa Bay Host Committee to raise funds for the convention infrastructure. So, it actually has nothing whatsoever to do with the RNC to begin with. Of course, that won’t stop hysterical lefties from trying to paint the GOP as dabbling in Islamic fascism or something. But hey, maybe even the University of Tampa is in on the conspiracy. Their newspaper is called The Minaret, after all.
The entire issue is a non-story filled with lies and shoddy reporting, but that doesn’t stop Talking Points Memo from trying to start some kind of phony GOP Islamic conspiracy theory, now does it?
I have yet to see any leftist group allow facts to get in the way of their storyline. This is another “squirrel!” moment. They can’t honestly debate the issues, so they need a distraction.
That is a moderate grade, better than most conservatives would receive. But Cassy still has quite a few key areas she needs to learn about, before she has fully comprehended enough about feminism to grasp the scope of damage it is doing.
I have to say you must not have read the TPM story.
Here is the salient point:
“And there may be those who wonder how some of the more anti-mosque elements of the GOP might react to such an architectural inclusion.”
So the issue is indeed interesting. The GOP doesn’t want to debate the idea of a mosque [which isn’t a mosque] two blocks from Ground Zero. In other parts of America conservatives are critical of mosques being built in their neighborhoods. Whether or not you think these are legit ocncerns the bottom line is the GOP don’t seem to like Muslims much. And so to have a Moorish architectual display on this poster logo is, if anything, ironic.
Nowhere does the article make a claim that the GOP is taking part in some Muslim conspiracy.
However some in the GOP sure like to float the idea about Obama being Muslim or the Democrats being pro-Muslim or pro-terrorist, etc.
I’ll leave it there.
