Yes really. That is what a group in Chicago along with a Chicago politician is now promoting.

A North Side community group is calling for people to refrain from shooting guns in Chicago between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. to reduce the risk to people “not involved in high risk activities.”

The proposal from Rogers Park-based Native Sons, known as “The People’s Ordinance,” was recently promoted in an email newsletter by Ald. Maria Hadden (49th).

You really thought I was joking didn’t you? But nooooo, this is a very real, sincere, and utterly asinine proposal aimed at stopping gangbangers from shooting each other and having innocents get caught in the crossfire. 

I mean seriously, do they REALLY think that asking them nicely to not shoot anything or anyone in a twelve hour time span will be the key to solving Chicago’s rampant crime? Evidently they do. 

‘PROTECT THE YOUTH NO SLIDING WILE THE SUN IS OUT’ reads the all-caps promo, titled United For A Safe Summer.They’re asking for the refrain from gunshots to reduce risk to Chicagoans who are ‘not involved in high risk activities.’

‘We have to start somewhere,’ Tatiana Atkins, co-founder of Native Sons, told CWB Chicago.

‘Our goal is to approach our city’s gun violence problem strategically and not all at once. Things didn’t become this way overnight, and change won’t happen overnight.

And exactly HOW will this idea be enforced? Will there be a special task force put in place to roam the city streets like hall monitors and scold the miscreants if they break the gun curfew? And, whatever you do, Mayor Johnson requests that you PLEASE do not call them a mob. It might hurt their little feelz.

Following a mass looting event in Chicago’s South Loop, forty individuals between the ages of 12 and 20 were arrested for reckless conduct misdemeanors. An estimated 300-400 people participated in “disorderly” behavior, attempting to loot a convenience store, leading to a public outcry and concerns over teenage criminal activities.

In response to the reporter’s use of the term “mob,” Mayor Johnson insisted on referring to the gathering as “large gatherings.” He stressed the importance of using appropriate language to describe such incidents, citing the city’s history and the need to avoid demonizing youth.

I tell you what, the Good Idea Fairy visits progressives way too often these days! Rather than, you know, have actual real consequences for those who break the law, let’s just ask criminals to please don’t shoot between 9am and 9pm please and thank you!’

Given the issues that the Chicago PD faces on a daily basis, it’s a fair assumption that this could happen. 

Even Atkins, one of the Native Son’s members reluctantly admits this idea has a bit of a problem. 

“Not everyone is willing to drop their beef,” she said. “If you aren’t mentally and emotionally equipped to solve disputes in a healthy manner, if you can’t help but harm each other – do so in a capacity in which children, elderly and those not involved in high-risk activities are less likely to be affected.”

Atkins hopes more alders and police district council members will endorse Native Sons’ proposal.

“I myself have reached out to active gang members in regards to this ordinance and have had more positive feedback than negative and have even had some of them (a small few) post this ordinance to their social media as well,” Atkins explained. “We live in a trend society, let’s get the right things trending – the more media, government officials, and community residents believe in this ordinance and stand behind it, the more likely the people will align with the ordinance.”

Wanna bet those gang members laughed for an hour straight after they hung up the phone? You and I both know they only told her what she wanted to hear.

Indeed. And just like all the other progressive trendy ideas, nothing will happen. The shootings will continue with or without a cutesy curfew until ACTUAL consequences are imposed for breaking the law.
