NYPD has a motto Fidelis Ad Mortem. Faithful unto death. Police officers and other law enforcement officers have one of the most dangerous jobs out there. They run towards danger to protect the innocent on a regular basis. On September 11, 2001 72 sworn police officers including 23 NYPD officers and 37 Port Authority of New York &New Jersey officers were faithful unto death. The Officer Down memorial page remembers the sworn law enforcement personnel who perished on September 11. They ran fearlessly towards a scene of horror and did not stop to save their lives but died to save others.
On the morning of September 11, 2001, seventy-two officers from a total of eight local, state, and federal agencies were killed when terrorist hijackers working for the al Qaeda terrorist network, headed by Osama bin Laden, crashed two of four hijacked planes into the World Trade Center towers in New York City. After the impact of the first plane, putting the safety of others before their own, law enforcement officers along with fire and EMS personnel, rushed to the burning Twin Towers of the World Trade Center to aid the victims and lead them to safety. Due to their quick actions, it is estimated that over 25,000 people were saved.
Truly there are no words to describe these amazing men and women who died to save thousands. From a grateful sheep, thank you to these fallen shepherds. Rest in peace heroes.
