The Elon/Trump Feud Is Stupid And Democrats Are Loving The Show

Well, yesterday was just stupid. President Trump and Elon Musk decided to feud and started hurling insults at each other on X and Truth Social.

Last year, two mercurial billionaires formed a partnership and vowed to drive the country in a new direction. Donald Trump had the political power. Elon Musk had the money and social media might.

But on Thursday, their union dissolved in remarkably public and rapid fashion, with the two men attacking each other over matters both significant and petty.

Beyond the immediate drama, the breakup of the president and the world’s richest man upended one of the most powerful dynamics shaping Mr. Trump’s second term.

Their dispute began days ago over the president’s signature domestic policy bill, which Mr. Musk had panned as a “disgusting abomination.” But it escalated uncontrollably on Thursday into a fight over who deserved more credit for Mr. Trump’s election victory, why Mr. Musk had not covered up his black eye with makeup during an Oval Office appearance last week and why Mr. Trump had abruptly dropped his support for a Musk associate nominated to lead NASA.

I’m not going to bother regurgitating the entire shit show. What is clear is that some of this feud is due to Elon getting pissed that the Big Beautiful Bill didn’t slash spending all over the place. Except that, as has been explained by several people, the bill CAN’T cut funding the way we all think it can or should. Why? Because of the laws already in place.

This was a RECONCILIATION bill, and as such the laws limit the bill to mandatory spending ONLY. PJ Media’s Charlie Martin has an excellent explainer here.

One of the biggest restrictions on reconciliation is that the reconciliation bill cannot, by law, affect anything except mandatory spending, and what constitutes mandatory spending is also established by law.

Reconciliation bills are not spending bills. They establish a budget, or propose a budget, but the actual spending must be established in a bill that starts in the House. A separate bill.

Read it all. The current bill does have spending and tax cuts in it. To get actual DOGE cuts, new bills have to be written, passed into law, and signed by the President. Someone needs to explain that to Elon.

Ben Shapiro also laid out his view of this feud.

No, as much as we’d wish it so. You can’t waltz into a federal agency and just start swinging axes. Some things HAVE to be accomplished through legislation once the problems are identified. That’s just a fact.

This tantrum between Elon and President Trump is only helping the Democrats. While the rest of us want them both to just put a freaking sock in it.

Driving the news: Musk initially focused his attacks on the massive GOP tax and spending cut legislation, arguing Tuesday that it doesn’t go far enough in cutting the deficit.

By Thursday, he turned his sights on Trump, claiming Trump is “in the Epstein files” and adding, “The truth will come out.”

He took his boldest step by responding to a post that said “Trump should be impeached and JD Vance should replace him” with a single word: “Yes.”

What they’re saying: “We’re getting people calling our offices 100% in support of President Trump,” said Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.), a member of House GOP leadership.

“Every tweet that goes out, people are more lockstep behind President Trump and [Musk is] losing favor,” Hern added.

Rep. Lloyd Smucker (R-Pa.) said Musk is “starting to look a little crazy” and “was always an important voice, but … it’s going to be a lot more people weighing what Trump has to say than what Musk has to say.”

I will say this. I have the very same concerns as Elon does regarding government spending. It is out of control and we have a debt load that is unsustainable. This is a problem that needs to be addressed, and too many on BOTH sides of the aisle are ignoring that reality.

Are there problems with the current bill? Yes. Are there good things in the bill? Also, yes. President Trump is doing what every President has done, defend his bill and take both the short and long view. What Elon and others need to understand is that there is just no way to put a bill in place that will fix all the problems in one fell swoop. It’s just entirely unrealistic.

This was most of us yesterday.

And there’s this about the stupid tantrum.

1) Musk is absolutely right that we need to take the deficits more seriously. That requires reforming entitlements and cutting wasteful programs. Simply moving money around while adding debt is a serious long-term threat.

2) Musk is also right that Trump’s tariff games are a disaster that are hurting the economy. They are also politically harmful.

3) Trump is right that there are serious conflicts with Musk influencing policy given his business interests. I don’t think those conflicts change #1 and #2, but they exist and should be acknowledged.

4) Threatening to cut government contracts because of a personal beef is wrong and corrupt. It’s also a game that would harm Americans.

I’m 100% on board with AG here. This public feud is helping one group here, the Democrats.

Elon Musk and President Trump need to remember something. WE THE PEOPLE. They need to remember that they are trying to reshape the government so it actually works FOR us, not AGAINST us.

This week, they both forgot that.

I couldn’t agree more. One last thing to consider. What if the tantrum ensued because someone else in the WH is stirring the pot with malicious intent?

Not surprising that two “mega-egos” would eventually clash. Surprising, though, that they “air their dirty laundry” in public in a manner that hurts them both. Grow up, BOYS!
