After Beyonce’s atrocious and classless performance last year, rumors swirled about the upcoming Lady Gaga performance at tonight’s Super Bowl 2017 Halftime show. The Houston Leader leaked earlier that Gaga’s performance may have a political slant with a Muslim tribute. From the Houston Leader:
Ms. Gaga will be using the worlds largest stage to discuss “a sickness inside us,” referring to the polarizing rhetoric that has brought Donald Trump to power, and to speak out regarding “overwhelming support for the Muslim community.
The source, who refers Lady Gaga’s music as “the cure” has asked followers to tweet #takethecure to end racism and bigotry.-The Houston Leader
There were no Hijabs of solidarity. No Black Panthers. No “Shame on you, Mr. Trump”. Instead, Gaga opened her show on the rooftop of the stadium with this:
When asked for hints on what her performance would include, Gaga only said this:
“The only statements that I’ll be making during the halftime show are the ones that I have been consistently making throughout my career. I believe in a passion for inclusion. I believe in the spirit of equality and the spirit of this country as one of love and compassion and kindness. My performance will uphold those philosophies.”-Lady Gaga
Gaga has been a great supporter of the LGBTQ community, inspiration for her song “Born This Way” and while certain media outlets claim her rendition of (socialist-leaning) Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land” was a subliminal nod to those protesting Trump’s proposed immigration bans and border walls, Gaga entertained and refrained from a political soapbox and stuck with pyrotechnics, aerials, drones, a “hi” to her mom and dad and comments in between songs like “We want to make you feel good” and “America, let’s have some fun”.
Gaga was surrounded by liberty-like torches during her performance of “Million Reasons” and ended her set with a mic drop. Did Gaga campaign for Hillary Clinton? Yes. Was Gaga’s “God Bless America”/”This Land is Your Land” montage a nod to protestors? Perhaps. But Gaga kept things light for the most part. She did what most (grounded) entertainers should set out to do: she entertained (I am guilty because I was dancing in the kitchen while making dinner). She made her statement but first and foremost, she entertained. And, she did not lip-sync. Added bonus.
Perhaps others who have come before her and will come after her will take heed. Move over, Madonna, you old hag. THIS is how it’s done!
(Mic Drop).
And, she did not lip-sync.
Wow. She continues to impress me with what she can do, rather than what she is known for.
(A friend of mine told me her 6yo grandson was evidently mildly upset Gaga wasn’t wearing pants. I said at least he’s young enough he’s not complaining about her not wearing meat.)
Move over, Madonna, you old hag.
Hey now! What did this kindly old woman ever do to you to justify being compared to Madonna?!
