If you didn’t think that the United States Senate was the most dysfunctional deliberative body in the known Universe before the dueling Senate bill battle, you sure know now. All of the Senators should be thoroughly ashamed of how badly they let themselves down. The shutdown continues, the Southern Border has a flashing “Open All Hours” sign, and people who work for a living are about to miss another paycheck. We, the taxpayers, got treated to a show of the poster children for the “Peter Principle”. Let’s take a walk through this snake infested swamp.
Apparently, before the battle was joined, Vice President Mike Pence joined the Republican Senators for lunch. They were unaware he would be attending. That fact probably empowered these spineless snakes to unload on poor Mike Pence. From The Hill:
Republican senators, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.), warned the vice president that prolonging the shutdown is not a smart political strategy, in hopes of sending a clear message to President Trump that he needs to resolve the crisis as soon as possible.
Lawmakers vented their irritation to Pence shortly before six GOP senators defected to vote for a Democratic-backed bill that would open the government without funding Trump’s proposed border wall.
To underscore the stern message they sent to Pence, six Republicans — Murkowski, Isakson and Sens. Lamar Alexander (Tenn.), Susan Collins (Maine), Cory Gardner (Colo.) and Mitt Romney (Utah) — voted for the Democratic proposal. But the 52-44 vote fell short of the 60 needed to advance the bill.
Thank you, Sweet Baby Jesus, that empty suit Lamar Alexander won’t stand for reelection in 2020.
The World’s Most Overrated Deliberative Body (George Will) then convened and began preparing to vote. One particularly noxious example was Michael Bennet of Colorado. According to several reports, he is known for his soft spoken and mild mannered style. Wrongo. Instead of spending all of his time on President Donald Trump’s 11,745 faults and lies, this guy really went after Senator Ted (better with the beard) Cruz. From the Daily Beast:
Moments before the Senate voted Thursday on dueling bills to reopen the government, Colorado Democrat Michael Bennet took to the floor to express his anger with the 33-day shutdown—and Republican Sen. Ted Cruz. Bennet spent more than 20 minutes ripping into Cruz, accusing the Texas lawmaker of faking his desire to reopen the government. “These crocodile tears that the senator from Texas is crying for first responders are too hard for me to take,” Bennet bellowed. “They’re too hard for me to take, because when the senator from Texas shut this government down in 2013, my state was flooded. It was underwater.” “People were killed,” he continued. “People’s houses were destroyed. Their small businesses were ruined, forever.” Bennet was referring to the 16-day shutdown in 2013 that Cruz was credited with starting after he fought Democratic efforts to reduce Obamacare funding.
It was quite a piece of performance art. Bennet paced and wildly gesticulated. He pulled more faces than a plastic surgeon. He really looked like he was psyching himself up for a boxing match. Here is the video and if you need a look at bad acting, it will give you tips:
Votes for the two competing bills were taken and neither reached the 60 vote requirement for passage. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (cast in the role of the Socrates of the Senate) noted, “…if you don’t have 60 votes yet, it just means you haven’t done enough advocacy and you need to work a lot harder.” You keep forming that exploratory committee for your Presidential Campaign, Kirsten. Chuck Schumer, the Senior Snake Senator from New York then blocked a vote to pay the Coast Guard. The members of the Coast Guard are the only “non-essential” employees not being paid who cannot quit their jobs. Nope. They are members of the military, but they are not under the Department of Defense. The Coast Guard used to be under the Department of Transportation, but have been under the Department of Homeland Security since 2003.
These Senators are not worth a bucket of slug slime.
Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer immediately began meeting to try to come to an agreement. Per KSRO News:
“Leader Mitch McConnell and Senator Chuck Schumer are meeting now to see whether or not they can work out of the deadlock. As was made clear to Senator Lindsay Graham, the 3 week CR would only work if there is a large down payment on the wall,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement.
Asked if he would support a temporary bill with no wall money, Trump told reporters “I wouldn’t be happy.”
“If they come to a reasonable agreement I would support it yes,” he said, according to a pool report.
There you have it. President Donald Trump continues to negotiate with himself (bad idea), the Senators of the United States continue to prove they are unworthy of their seats and “Negative” Nancy Pelosi and the House of Representatives care so much about the unpaid wage slaves of the Federal Government they have taken a three day weekend. To go back and hear the stories of the unpaid wage slaves in their districts. Ain’t it big of them.
Makes you want to put on your boxing gloves and punch something, doesn’t it.
