It’s been a week since the tragedy in Las Vegas. It’s taken some of us (like yours truly) a whole week to process it all. The arguments flew and continue to fly and the conspiracy theories continue to be crafted. All the while, people are still hurting.
It’s hard not to politicize a tragedy of this magnitude. Inevitably, the focus is taken off of an unstable human being who was the mastermind and focus is placed in the hands of innocent, well-meaning Americans who own guns which is why hearing this from California Senator, Dianne Feinstein speak on Face The Nation yesterday morning made me do a double-take:
“See, I don’t know what to make of it. What this event said – this is a well-to-do man, he wasn’t mentally ill. Um, he wasn’t a criminal, he wasn’t a juvenile, he wasn’t gang banger, and he was able to buy 40 weapons over a period of time, have 12 bump stocks, line them up, break through two windows in his hotel suite, and take aim at tens of thousands — well I guess over a thousand people at a concert. And this was such a cross section of America that it really struck at every one of us, that this could happen to you. And we want to stop it.”

So now, Ms. “Mr. and Mrs. America, Turn them all In” basically said that no gun laws would have stopped that sick, twisted waste of human flesh, Steven Paddock from a shooting spree. But, by all means, Senator Feinstein, let’s push your agenda:
I wonder why Dianne Feinstein spoke the truth. That's not like her.

…”But we need a law against bump stocks,” she now says. Says the woman who once owned a revolver. Says the woman who gave up her concealed permit. See what I did there? She had a choice to obtain a weapon once upon a time and she did. She also had a a choice to forfeit her concealed permit and she did. In the same breath of arguing for tighter controls, she also said laws and red tape would not have prevented the Las Vegas shooting.
Here’s the deal, Senator Feinstein. Some of us have more than one weapon in our household. Want to ban bump stocks? What’s next? How about banning an excess of three hammers or baseball bats? Some of us have more than one car that could plow into an innocent crowd of people, too. And, I happen have some steak knives that may need to be confiscated…
Feinstein says Paddock “wasn’t a criminal” (he was) and wasn’t “mentally ill” (actually, he was), he was able to obtain weapons legally because “no gun laws” would have stopped the massacre so, according to this logic, we need to create more legislation to take guns away from owners who only seek to protect themselves. “Gun laws don’t work” equates the argument for disarmament. All the while, drugs are a also problem and killing off our population, too. The Democrats’ arguments and remedy for this particular problem? According to Democrat gun-ban logic, one would think this would be fodder for a ban on drugs. Wrong!. Instead, let’s go ahead and arm drug addicts with syringes and set up Safe injection sites for heroin addicts! Doped-up and unarmed Americans sounds like a wonderful future for our country, doesn’t it?
Feinstein may not “know what to make of it”, but we do. It’s her logic (or lack thereof) we don’t know what to make of. Our prayers continue to go out to victims, friends and family members of #LasVegas.
