Courageous. Principled. Frugal. At least that’s what we expect to get from our newly elected ‘Tea Party’ Congress set to take office on January 5th. One of the nifty results of the Tea Party’s success in November is that House Republicans from this 112th Congress plan to read The Constitution aloud — unbelievably for the first time in the Chamber’s 221-year history as they convene this week. The reading of The Constitution out loud will be on January 6th and will take about 1/2 hour.
And of course, as if on cue, the cynical left call the reading of the Constitution out loud, political theater. And why wouldn’t they? They don’t ‘get‘ the Constitution in the first place! It’s too confusing for their simple minds.
Political theater? Of course, but so what? It’s reading our country’s Constitution out loud for gosh sakes — something that shouldn’t have taken 221 years to do. It’s only a good thing in my opinion.
By the way, there’s a long list of changes in the 112th Congress. One standout change is a requirement that every new bill in the House contain a statement by the lawmaker who wrote it citing the constitutional authority to enact the proposed legislation. That’s definitely a nod to the Tea Party!
Is it not incredulous that Congress, in all their 221 years, hasn’t ever read out loud the Constitution? No wonder they SUCK.
Really is it any wonder at all that our country is in such a mess right now? Maybe the reading of the Constitution is for show to some but I love it. I want them to do this often. It is a document, like the Bible, that grounds us in our principles and beliefs. My hopes are high with the 112th. I hope they don’t let us down.
Actually, EVERY congress should start with the reading of the Constitution. It’s the MOST IMPORTANT THING they could do with their first 1/2 hour of their session.
It makes sense.
It instills / explains the “rules”.
It’s a great idea for EACH congress to do, and I hope they DO it from now on.
