The death of Neil Simon, at age 91, marks the passing of a master of old school, timeless comedy. With more than 30 stage plays and another 30+ screenplays, Simon’s wins of Oscars and Tonys stand as the measure no other writer has met.

Simon’s childhood was difficult. He grew up Jewish in New York during the Depression, unwilling witness to the dysfunctional relationship of his parents. Simon himself pointed out that his need to escape the emotional turmoil of his family lead him to writing. It was his means of establishing his independence and strength.

Out of that tumultuous beginning, American entertainment was blessed with some of the most iconic comedies written for stage or screen.

Simon’s comedy works because his heroes and heroines are imperfect, fallible and flawed human beings. Human beings caught in all the issues chaotic life throws at them, coping as best they can but always decent at heart.

Neil Simon did this with no appeal to shock or resort to profanity.

The man is gone. However, his plays will continue be to revived on stages across the country and to eager audiences.

God speed, Neil.

A serious question. Do you think Mr. Simon’s works will hold up over time? Do you think that 30 years from now they will be revived?
