Middlebury College Professor Injured By Out Of Control Student Mob

A college professor in Vermont was attacked by a group of college students who were protesting a speaker whose views were unpopular with the liberal student body. Dr. Charles Murray, author of the “Bell Curve: Intelligence and Class Structure in American Life” was invited to speak at Middlebury and was subjected to what you see in the video below. He was invited to discuss his new book “Coming Apart: The State Of White America“-which students argue is normalizing white supremacy and white nationalism. Obviously, irony abounds here. One of the students protesting Dr. Murray is holding a sign that says “Fuck Eugenics”-ironic since I am sure this group would defend well known Eugenicist Margaret Sanger (founder of Planned Parenthood who was a big believer in white supremacy) to their death.

Let us get to discussing the Professor though who was physically attacked by this unruly mob while escorting Dr. Murray off of campus. Evidently while she was attempting to escort Dr. Murray to his vehicle the students blocked their way out of the building. As described in a blog post on Seven Days:

“Professor Allison Stanger was assaulted and her neck was injured when someone pulled her hair as she tried to shield Murray from the 20 or 30 people who attacked the duo outside the McCullough Student Center, said Bill Burger, a vice president of communications at Middlebury College.”

I must say that I applaud the response of the college’s President, Laurie Patton, who said she was “deeply disappointed” by the students behavior in a statement to students later that day.

“I know that many students, faculty, and staff who were in attendance or waiting outside to participate were upset by the events, and the lost opportunity for those in our community who wanted to listen to and engage with Mr. Murray,” she wrote, later adding: “I extend my sincerest apologies to everyone who came in good faith to participate in a serious discussion, and particularly to Mr. Murray and Prof. Stanger for the way they were treated during the event and, especially, afterward.”

Administrators were smart however, and moved the speaker to a closed room with Professor Stanger in order to live stream his talk online. About 30 minutes after the event ended Professor Stanger and Dr. Murray, escorted by two campus public safety officers, tried to depart the building and get Dr. Murray to his car. Protesters had surrounded the premises and swarmed both the Professor and her guest. Protesters reportedly grabbed Professor Stanger’s hair and pulled her neck back resulting in a neck strain injury. Once she and Murray made it to his car, they continued to harass the pair by jumping on the hood of the car and banging on the windows. Dr. Murray attempted to inch out of the parking space but as the crowd surrounded the vehicle he gave up. After someone attempted to throw a Stop sign with a heavy cement base at the car, Dr. Murray managed to get the car free and leave campus.

For the intellectually curious among us, you can watch the entirety of this hot mess in the video above. For myself, I doubt sincerely that Dr. Murray is in fact a “white nationalist”. Many people I respect have read the Bell Curve and someone I respect endlessly for his bravery has been termed a “white nationalist” by buffoons like these for holding opinions contrary to theirs. I wish Professor Stanger a quick and complete recovery, to Dr. Murray I say “Good show sir”. I hope that neither of them allows themselves to be silenced by the violent left.

The special snowflakes have zero historical knowledge, even of events only 10 years in the past. Time to respond with rubber bullets.

    Parker,
As soon as they blocked the exits, it became a public safety issue. That is when the PD should have gotten involved.

The seeds of this were sown some years ago. I encountered it 30+ years attending several different institutions of higher learning. It wasn’t clear to me, although I did recognize that there was a noticeable shift in what took place in the classroom vs. 20 years perviously.

Little did I think think that matters would take the trajectory they have. Any person with a modicum of education recognizes that when attempting to problem-solve it’s helpful to look at various aspects of the issue. That there continues to be evidence across the U.S. of persons who ought to be most attuned to this but are unwilling to do so doesn’t bode well for them nor the nation.

      VALman,
I agree. Not having attended a large University myself, I was happily insulated from things like this. What we are seeing throughout the nation in regards to violence is frightening. It truly is 1984 come to life. THIS is not the behavior of intellectuals. This is a violent temper tantrum.

      • VALman says:

Yes, Jennifer, it is rather frightening what’s taking place on some of these campuses. I’m surprised they haven’t taken to book-burning. Parents today have it tough, thinking of plunking down thousands of dollars for a college education only to realize that their offspring will be exposed to this sort of thing in and out of the classroom.

Any of the so-called “students” who participated in the violence should be immediately expelled and any scholarships awarded rescinded. Furthermore, those who assaulted the professor and those who were throwing items with the intent to damage or harm should be fully prosecuted.

These snowflakes claim to be adults but they are acting like spoiled rotten children. It’s time they grow up and that society stop enabling and coddling them. If they know there are consequences to their actions, maybe they’ll think twice before acting. One can only hope.

    • Jennifer says:

      Couldn’t agree more Stephanie!

    • VALman says:

Stephanie, I think you’re correct about consequences. Sometimes they are not always immediate; they come later in life. Imagine what sort of employees some of these “snowflakes” will be. I know I wouldn’t want to be their supervisor.

Ok get the desire for soft retaliation. But the flower of the weed needs to be nipped in the bud. Otherwise weeds prosper. Harsh ( rubber bullets and pepper spray) combined with 1 to 3 imprisoned with their darling ‘oppressed’ diversity longing fellow travelers will be a chance for rehabilitation.
